In Reversal, Obama to End Effort to Restrict Morning-After Pill.
The Obama administration has decided to stop trying to block over-the-counter availability of the most popular morning-after contraceptive pill for all women and girls, a move fraught with political repercussions for President Obama.
The reversal by the government means that anyone, no matter how young, will soon be able to walk into a drugstore and buy the pill, Plan B One-Step, without a prescription.
The Justice Department had been fighting to prevent that outcome, but said late Monday afternoon that it would drop its appeal of a judge’s order to make the drug more widely available. In a letter to Judge Edward R. Korman of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the administration said it would comply with his demands that the Food and Drug Administration be allowed to certify the drug for nonprescription use.
My comments: This is major news. Think about the implications. Incidentally, I don’t think this will hurt Obama. More likely, women will be rushing up to kiss the hem of his garment.
This totally destroys all Republican efforts to control women through denying abortion rights and limiting access to traditional contraception. It totally destroys the debate over whether or not a Catholic employer should allow its insured employees to seek abortions, or contraception, or anything else.
It provides women with the power to control their reproductive choices and how joyful it is that they won’t be dealing with a fetus, although the diehards will still say, hey, a sperm is a potential human being.
Women will be able to deal with work place issues that deny them advancement because, you know, they could get pregnant. Not anymore.
I am thrilled with this.
I can just see Rush Limbaugh choking on his linguini as he reads this news. Also, eat your heart out Rick Santorum.
