The Acquisitive Life

Yesterday Ed gave in to his wish list because BJ’s was offering a great deal on a HD flat screen TV, so he got a Sharp 60 inch and we (with help) loaded it into the SUV and brought it home. Our dear neighbor, Gary, helped him set it up on the stand that came with it -- later we will attach it to the wall.

Today a guy from Dish Network came to hook it up and he worked several hours to make all our TV connections compatible. Then they plugged it in and it didn’t work. Lots of frustration, and Ed was on the phone arranging for Sharp to send someone on Friday and I went for a bike ride.

I got home to an empty house – the TV was gone-o. No note, but then, Ed never leaves notes. Also, his cell phone wasn’t on. So I called gtf Nadine, who I knew had come over to deliver a pie made for Ed by Marie-Paul, his student to whom he is teaching English. There goes my waistline. Nadine told me that Ed and Sheldon, the TV guy, had loaded the TV into the SUV and gone to return it to BJ’s. Oh.

Ed called a bit later to say he was close to home, and had the same TV with him because when they had plugged it in at BJ’s, it had worked. He wanted me to get Gary to help him get it into the house again (this sucker is really heavy) so I walked next door and dear Gary said he would be over in a few minutes. Then at 7:30 p.m., Sheldon came back, having finished some other job, and anyway, his parents live down the street, and he got everything working, and now we can watch TV again. We still don’t know why it didn’t work the first time.

Then I located all of the cats, because our doors were open during this operation. Two, however, had got into the spare bedroom that is usually always kept closed. I found Max by the headboard, but couldn’t see Brunswick. After hunting everywhere, I went back with a flashlight and located him nesting between some boxes stored under the bed. I couldn’t reach him, so I closed the door on them to give them a chance to get tired of being in there.

Ed is exhausted. Me, not so much. I don’t worry about things that can be fixed. A lost cat, however, is a totally different story.

xx, Teal

You can record on the later iPods, at least iPod Touch. And even the regular iPods can be tweaked to enable voice recording. A friend was using his iPod Touch as a long-distance phone, long before it became easy.

Ted and Bobby will be wanting a 60 inch any day now. They both have ones
that are plenty big for me.

I was happy enough with our old set too, but this was a dream that could be realized so I didn't want to be a downer.

Mr. TBend wanted a 60-inch and I told him 42 inches was big enough. I was surprised at how heavy those flat screen models are, and how much heat some of them put out. But the picture sure is clear. I wouldn't let him put the box out in the trash for fear someone would drive by and know we had a new TV, break in and steal it. He flattened it and put the cardboard out in dribs and drabs, what we didn't use for other things.

Well, now that it's working, Ed is happy as a clam. I am glad it was his wish list and not mine, since, when things go wrong, he is inclined to say it was all because of my wish list I would never shut up about. Translation: I'd mention it once a year.

I am beginning the search for new TVs, as my oldest 15-year-old set just gave up the ghost and my other one is showing signs of meeting a similar fate. This means I have to explore more choices and options than I have any patience with. All the TVs are huge, and all I want are two small ones, under 24-inches with VCRs and DVDs. Simple. The sales staff look at me like I am nuts. [Sigh....]

Maybe you can find what you are looking for on E Bay or Angie's list or other "used" stuff sites. Once an industry leaves old technology behind, the consumer is left hanging. I had a Walkman that was a radio, a tape recorder and tape player, and with great sound. Can't replace it now. I can't record with my iPod. Maybe that's coming.
