Jackie Robinson Day

image
This was a great man!
Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball on April 15, 1947 with my favorite team, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Much more than baseball felt the impact of this singular forerunner.
Today in baseball is Jackie Robinson Day. All players will wear his number... 42.

Jackie Robinson's achievement was such that it benefited all Americans, white and black.
It especially benefited us Dodger fans!!

So, I watched last night's baseball recap, and was tickled pink to see all those number 42s, mostly because I picture a situation where Mr. YouKnow would be watching some baseball thing, and I'd be knitting or something. All of a sudden, something would seep into my consciousness, and I'd gripe to him: "it looks to me like everyone has the same number. The uniform people must have made a mistake." And then I'd laugh at myself when he told me "it's Jackie Robinson Day" as if any fool should have known that. He probably has it imprinted on his DNA.

My Tribe got their first night off of the 2013 season, so they didn't get to wear the jerseys with his retired number. Note that EVERY team in the MLB has retired number 42. The second black player in the leagues was the Cleveland Indians' Larry Doby, same 1947 season. Doby was the first player to go directly to the majors from the Negro leagues. A seven–time consecutive All-Star center fielder, Doby and teammate Satchel Paige were the first African-American players to win a World Series championship when the Indians won in 1948. He was also the first black player to hit a home run in the World Series and All-Star Game. He helped the Indians win a franchise-record 111 wins and AL pennant in 1954 and finished second in the AL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award voting as he was the season's RBI leader and home run champion for the second time in three seasons. In 1978 he became the second African-American manager in the majors when he joined the Chicago White Sox.

all kind of good stuff about this movie.Going to see this as the Brooklyn Dodger were one of my favorites as a youngster and remember him well.Hear that the movie is great.
The Boston Red Sox all wore the no.42 on their shirt and it was Jackie Robinson Day and they won.
