The Yips

Sooner or later, for a golfer, the yips will grab you.

For the non-golfer, "the yips" mean getting nervous standing over, and consequently missing, a 3-foot putt. One can make 10 out of 10 in practice, but when it counts, somehow it's different.

I'm there. I actually start to shake. It's horrible and uncontrollable, like stage fright. No matter how much you talk to yourself about "nothing to fear", "relax", etc., it occurs.

I've decided to quit playing with the group of guys that play for money. It's not enjoyable anymore because it's so nerve-wracking. I prefer to either play by myself or a couple of friends.

Golf should be fun, not stressful. Have a good weekend.

I can choke up when playing piano for people. My fingers stop functioning. I know the feeling. If it's the betting, then eliminate that.

It's not very often someone agrees with me!

Had them for years. Changed my putting grip. It helped a little.
I have the "no bets" rule too. Cash belongs in the bar at the 19th hole, not on the greens or tees.

That long putter and "new" putting style didn't help Adam Scott, did it? It's all between the ears.

Thanks for the "congratulatory" phone call. I'm ready to go tackle the golf greens (and gods) again today, despite the heat.

We used to call that "choking" in other games.

Ouch. The mind and nerves are hard to control.

I forgot to mention I had a hole-in-one just two days before! It's my third one in 56 years of golfing. That means I'll be about 88 before I have another one!

Wow! You are right- don't play for money, though I doubt it is about the money. I'm sure the bets are not more than you can afford. I think you fear losing face more than losing dollars.

Only $3--no biggie. It's just frustrating, because it's ridiculous to be that way.
