Wildflowers

Despite the drought and intense heat, my walks along county roads are pleasant. Why? It's not the beans or corn. It's the wildflowers growing along side.

Queen Anne's Lace, purple clover, chicory, mustard, etc. color the ditches on both sides. Evidently, they have deep roots and get extra moisture from road runoff.

These flowers--I refuse to call them weeds--attract butterflies and bees, rabbits and birds (esp. goldfinches).

This all makes for a very enjoyable after-dinner walk.

I biked at 5 p.m. today and the heat was still oppressive. I got home exhausted. I lay down with ice packs

Good for you! Exhaustion means you've had a workout.

I have native flowers in my front garden which never need to be watered, even in this drought. You are correct-they have deep roots meant to survive droughts.

Of course, Q.A. lace is a wild carrot, so little wonder its root is a mile down! I got nearly an inch of rain this morning! Hip hip!

I planted "wildflowers" next to my parking area last year and pulled them up when they got about three-feet tall. Then Donna reminded me that I had planted them. That is the end of wildflowers for me! I agree about the roadsides tho. We have some non-native blue flowers that have been working their way north and they look much better than tall grass and weed.

Probably chicory, which is blue. I've been known to pull stuff I've planted, too!

Hmmm ... I was just outside walking dogs and I have to say, it's far too warm to be enjoyable. Glad you do tho!

The golfing has been miserable. My evening walks are later when it cools down to 90!!!

Oh, please take photographs of the wildflowers! I love them and miss them so much!

Taking pics is the easy part. Posting them is the problem!! I guess I can add them to my "album".
