Pros and Cons

I'm sitting here thinking if this is worth spending time posting. I had (only) 4 responses to my lengthy previous post, and one message reply to the 10-15 comments I made to other mybloggers blogs. Is everybody on "vacation"?

I wanted to follow up on my Michigan trip with a few general observations. I do a lot of cogitation when driving and hiking. Here are a few:

--I miss having a companion to share sights and events. I do converse with strangers a lot, however.
--I don't miss having a companion when it restricts my freedom to go and do what I want to do.
--There are too many people in the U.S. It's a madhouse out there.
--Furthermore, most of these people are ignorant, selfish, nuts, and overweight. I'll forgo examples.
--Camping has its drawbacks (but it's cheap). Here are several: mosquitoes, rain, comfort, no shower, "visitors" (human and animals), other campers (dogs barking, children yelling, car doors slamming, cars beeping, fireworks). For the life of me, I don't understand how humans can coexist in an RV park with campers positioned "spitting distance" from each other. Oh yes, down with campfires and smoke.

-- Few people hike trails. I usually have a trail all to myself. Why is this? Are people that lazy or out of shape? They want only to park their trailer, pull out the lawn chairs and drink beer? I can do that at home. I don't go "camping" just to sit around "vegging out". Did I mention all the wild blueberries I found while hiking a trail (alone)? Nobody "wild forages" anymore. I stand--and hike--alone.

--Despite being "on vacation", the whole experience is stressful. I am always "on alert", thinking "what's next? Where to go next? What to do? What if....? Vehicle breakdown, getting lost. It's difficult to really relax when on the road.

I think I'll stay home for awhile!!

Although I have a blog (actually 2) elsewhere, I'm not blogging there either. I'm enjoying the "break", but I have moments when I wish I could share what's going on with everyone out there.

The above link is to a Massive Moves episode - the house they moved is just up the road from me. I didn't see the move, but I sure did a double take when I drove past the house the first time! When the couple is being interviewed in front of the house, I was driving by! The road where the girls are riding in front of the house is a road I often run. I run past the house now. Can't tell if they have moved into it yet. I only know them to wave as they drive by.

Thank you. I'll check it out. Remember, "we" moved a house last Feb. (and got it stuck in the mud).

That link might not work. It's Historic House:

...and overweight? Oh no! Randy doesn't like me anymore!

Oops. I've gotten myself in trouble before talking about weight. Thanks for not shutting me out of your life (yet).

Now look at all the comment you got from all this whiningThey felt sorry for you.
Poor Randy.Cheer up.I do not get any comment
comment by fredo on July 17, 2012 11:07 AM ()
Still here, even if I don't comment. Not getting emails on new posts - so I have to come looking for them when I remember.

Are you going to tell me where you're blogging at? I miss you!
reply by solitaire on July 17, 2012 8:10 AM ()
Here's another thought. You probably have some lurkers. I was a lurker for a long time.
comment by boots586 on July 16, 2012 1:09 PM ()
People who read you but don't comment. Can you tell who reads you but doesn't leave a comment?
reply by boots586 on July 17, 2012 3:04 PM ()
You got me on this one. I'm not sure I know what a lurker is in this situation.

I always try to read ya. I was gone for awhile on vacation up in new york at the familys lake house, but I am back now.
Some people enjoy having people nearby... think of city people, they are never far from other humans! Some people thrive on that. You, it seems, do not.
comment by kristilyn3 on July 16, 2012 6:40 AM ()
You got that right!! I wouldn't say I'm a loner, but i like my privacy or "alone" time. And I appreciate your attention to my posts. I may turn into a Jim (Hayduke) or Sue (Susil) and just write, not read other blogs. (Now watch--they'll read this and get mad at me!)

I'll still take a motel and a comfy bed, even if it means less vacation time. RV's are for chauvinistic men who want to sit in their lawn chairs, drink beer, belch and fart while women cook, clean, and do the same things they do at home. Vacation????? Only if you are a man!

comment by redimpala on July 16, 2012 5:47 AM ()
I'll have to disagree with your generalization, but I catch your drift. I'm certainly not like your typical male camper.

I have to admit that I just read Jeri's most recent post and didn't comment. Same thing could have happened here. My situation is more complicated but the bottom line is that I don't travel at all these days. So from that point of view, you're ahead of the game!
comment by jjoohhnn on July 15, 2012 7:18 PM ()
Yeah, I don't always comment. I'm about through blogging. I've made enough enemies for one reason or another--mostly because I'm outspoken.

For me half the fun is the planning before the trip. You forgot about the TVs that people bring camping.
comment by boots586 on July 15, 2012 4:08 PM ()
Plus all the other gadgets! Yes, I enjoyed the planning. Internet was a huge help.

Get a GPS and you will not get lost.We are here if you want to talk.I would think that you should give Maine a shot there are a lot of campground, hiking, anything you want and being a beautiful state.Climb mountains and get a GPS.The price has come way down believe me.
I enjoy your ranting an bitching and why not that is you.
Do not let the comment bother you if you do not get any.Summer is a bad time and people are doing stuff. But were here to help.
comment by fredo on July 15, 2012 10:01 AM ()
Thanks, I think. I'm not "bitching", just making observations. Evidently, it came out that way. I've considered signing up for a volunteer trip to Acadia N.P. Who knows what the future holds?

Sometimes I have to wonder why on earth you repeatedly do things that annoy you, and then complain about it, when you control your own happiness or lack of it. No one else.
comment by marta on July 15, 2012 7:36 AM ()
You're sounding like Teal. Oh well, I deserve it.
reply by solitaire on July 16, 2012 5:00 PM ()
When I don't get "enough" responses, I just move on. Try not to let the annoyances of every-day stuff get to you. They're not going to go away and the only thing you can control is your attitude and your response. You know enough about traveling now that you should be able to organize a trip that spares you from the things you don't like.
comment by tealstar on July 15, 2012 7:15 AM ()
Easier said than done. I will defer further explanation.

Sorry, Randy. I read your stuff, but lately I've been so busy, I just read and run. I visit MyBloggers everyday and read a lot. I like to leave comments, but this week has been hectic working 49 hours and taking care of the church. I'll have plenty of time next week to comment and respond to comments....Yippeee!! Looking forward to those pies you've been bragging on.
comment by jerms on July 15, 2012 6:07 AM ()
No complaints, just observations. Enjoy those pies.
