Stale Beer?

I'm not a beer drinker--never was, never will be. I think it's an acquired taste.

Nonetheless, I had one a couple of days ago.

You see, I've held on to one beer can in my pantry for emergencies, such as in asking a guest if he'd like a beer.

I don't remember where (or when) the beer came from. It was a Budweiser.

And, I don't know if they still advertise "born on" dates, but the can had the date stamped on as Oct 96. I'm guessing that beer was AT LEAST 16 years old. It was so old, instead of the can saying "King of Beers", it said "Knight of Beers". Okay, maybe I exaggerate.

When opened and guzzled, it still fizzed (amazingly). And you know, it didn't taste too bad. But it was 95 degrees outside, and I was thirsty--and desperate!

I don't think I'll buy a replacement. I'll probably be dead before it gets drunk. However, they say beer makes good garden slug bait.

I am not a beer drinker either. Wine... dry, red wine for me, please.

For young people perhaps. For me (and you), everything old is still old.

Budweiser is not beer -- it is a flavored fizzy watery thing. I like dark beer that bites your tongue when you sip it -- I love German beer, draft beer, ale, but I drink it rarely because of the calories. I also only drink it with spicy knockwurst/sauerkraut meals -- a rathskellar treat. You'd probably like it too if you weathered the "strange" part of drinking it.

I drank the Bud with salty peanuts--that helped it go down, but didn't quench my thirst. I'll stick with wine.

I don't like beer either. I grew up in Peoria, IL, next to Peoria Heights, where they brewed Pabst Blue Ribbon. When the wind was right, we could smell the hops or malt or whatever they put in it that smelled really bad. I do have four bottles of nine year old Michelob in the fridge for emergencies. I can always offer guests a beer.

I lived waaay too close for comfort to the Labatt's Brewery in New Westminster. Some mornings, when the wind was just right, I would step outside and gag at the stench of the yeast.

Yeah! I don't feel so bad now. Pabst--from the land of sky blue waters.

I'd have to be really desperate to drink beer but a shandy (1/2 beer mixed with 1/2 ginger ale) would hit the spot.

Gosh, I learn something new every day. Shandy, eh?

EEEEeiiiiiwwwww I would have chucked it. I follow the dates on everything, my parents think I am crazy for it with some things, like beer.

I'm of the opinion that "dating" things is only the producer's method of getting consumers to chuck "old" and buy new. Some things last forever--some not. You're probably correct.

They drank some really old beer on the show "Lost"!

Left overs from the Dharma Initiative. I was a Lost junkie. They tolerated it since there were no other options.

Washed up? How did they react?

Wow, that had to be nasty! 16-year old and warm. Too bad one of your guests never took you up on the deal. They would have been thrilled!
comment by eddie on July 23, 2012 7:16 AM ()
For some reason, I had the foresight to put the can in the fridge last week, so it was just old, not warm!

I have some beer laying around also--for slugs--that Donna doesn't get around to putting in the garden. I never acquired a taste for Bud either. Schaefer and Piels, usually in a bottle. That was maintenance brew. I get a 6 of the Canadian stuff (the name escapes me) when I had a few extra bucks. Ah yes, the "good old days". Haven't puked in 30 years, but I suppose that's its own story that doesn't belong here....

Surprisingly, the taste wasn't as bad as I remembered. I actually liked European beer (Heineken) when I was there 44 yrs ago (toured the facility).
