Having just completed a book, I must relate it to all.
It's titled "Alice's Piano, The Life of Alice Herz-Sommer".
Alice, born in 1903, was a Czech child prodigy on the piano.
In 1942, she and her family were held prisoners in Theresienstadt concentration camp (Jews).
While most of her immediate family were murdered, she and her son survived, thanks to her piano concerts.
This particular concentration camp was "a 'show camp', a living slice of propaganda engineered by the Nazis to convince outsiders that the Jews were being treated humanely". Alice was a featured "performer", all the while millions were being tortured and gassed. (As sick as the events were, the book gives an inside look at the conditions prisoners faced.)
Chopin was Alice's forte (which Harriet (Teal) played for me once). For all the pianists reading the book, there are many musical passages added.
It's a sad, even tragic story, yet Alice's optimistic personality transcends the doom and gloom. Incredibly, Alice is still alive at 108!! Oldest Holocaust survivor.
If you "google" her, there is a youTube "recital" given by her. Even if you don't read the book, you should all look her up. She's an amazing story. (Harriet, get the book!!)
