Yearning to Hike

It's mid-January. It's cold, windy, snowy, and icy. I'm miserable because I can't get out and walk, jog, hike, let alone golf.

When I went to the library the other day, I took time to read Backpacker magazine. It listed "best hikes in each state". Oh, did that depress me. I must do "that one" I kept saying.

My state's best hike is about 3 hours away in the Hoosier Nat. Forest. I've never done it. Soon, I promise.

The hike that calls me the loudest is in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I've never been to Hawaii. I've never seen an active volcano. Wouldn't that be the best hike ever?

But for right now, I'd be happy for just a simple walk in the countryside. I'm going stir crazy!

I'm going stir crazy too. Too much Snow, then lots lots of rain, then floods. I'm ready for Spring!

I used to think I might take a European bike trip (after I was widowed) but I never got around to it. Then Ed came along and his idea of exercise is pressing the buttons on the remote.

I walked around the volcano on the Big Island just as it was getting ready to erupt. The guide said Pele (?) always sends lava out in the form of animals before she erupts. He picked up several critters and sure enough in three days she blew. Fortunately we were back home. Skeptical? It really happened.

Three things I want to live for: To travel the West in the rig, to experience an active volcano, and to spend time in Alaska in the summer "The Midnight Sun". As somebody said on my blog when I bitched about winter: Think spring, and it will come!

I hiked enough for a couple of lifetimes in the Army. Most of it with ninety pounds extra. But I would like to hike the Appalachian Trail again. The one in Hawaii sounds great!

I've walked around the volcanoes on the big island a bit. It was hot, except near the coast where the sea spray came up.

Do you think you'll go ... someday?

Guess walking in the snow is a pain in the ***?

Nothing beats hiking...NOTHING. I've had to cancel two planned hikes in the past month b/c of the winter weather. I finally bought snowshoes but they aren't what I thought they'd be...instead of helping me walk across snow, I just sink in the same as I did without the dang things.
