Life & Events > The Wannabe

The Wannabe

I suppose most of us have dreams and aspirations, perhaps to be or do something different with our lives.

I have often found myself in that "wannabe" state of mind.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a cowboy a la Roy Rogers or Hopalong Cassidy. The closest I came was to ride a horse. Oh, and I've been "out west".

I thought I might want to be a farmer. Becoming a gardener is as close as I became.

Perhaps a golf pro like my childhood hero Gary Player? Nope.

I went to college to become an optometrist. I opted (play on words here) to go into teaching. At least it was in science.

Maybe theater? I thought I had musical and acting talent. And I was in IU's Singing Hoosiers. Alas, another crashing disappointment.

My parents were artists, so perhaps.....? Yeah, right. Years later, I did paint houses during summer vacations!

My father was a skilled carpenter and architect (although he made a living selling cars). Could I...? Nah, forget that idea.

I wanted to be tall and buff. We know how that worked out--short and scrawny. Good personality, however!

I loved to read and write. Could I be a journalist or write a novel? Blogging is as close to that as I came.

I got my Masters degree in geography, so perhaps I could be a cartographer, work for National Geographic, or become a world traveler. None of the above. Just a U.S.A traveler.

How about signing up for and becoming a "teacher in space" astronaut? Instead, I was only a spaced out astronomy teacher. Close enough.

Lastly, and currently, I want to be forever young. We all know how that'll work out!

But, you know what? I'm perfectly happy with the way my life turned out. I wouldn't want it any other way--well, except for a couple of things! Continue dreaming.

To further emphasize the point I wanted to make, you will never be Tiger Woods, but you don't stop playing golf. Because you love it. Because it isn't about being world class. Because you love it.

I just want to be a millionaire so I can retire and help my friends financially. Ok, seriously, I wanted to be a good mother who raised two beautiful sons and I accomplished that.

Hi Nancy. Down to earth accomplishments are equally fulfilling. I'm sure "you done good"!

We all have unfulfilled dreams. Mine was to be a concert pianist. But it takes more drive and focus than I was willing to give it. Also my brain couldn't tolerate that kind of intensity. When I practice some Beethoven as much as it needs, I can have nightmares. Ballet was out -- started too late, didn't have the physical stamina. Used to have pirouette dreams. I was born to be a dilettante and that seems to work for me. A friend of earlier years said she studied to be a opera singer but gave up her studies when she realized she would never "be great". And I thought as I listened to her, you don't give it up, no matter what your level, so you can't have loved it very much. As it is, not to give it up means to get better all the time. That's what it is about.

In regards to "not giving up" on ones dreams: in many respects that's a worthy philosophy. But one must be realistic about certain limitations in ability. I should have added that to my post.

I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up.

This is a strange post considering what I have been thinking about lately. It is like an echo- although we had very different goals and dreams.

I'm not sure why this post idea popped into my mind. I have a strange mind, I reckon. Let's hear your "wannabe" list!

My geography classes were mostly of the "physical" nature, like related to science (mountains, oceans, rocks, etc.). I loved it all. Can't wait to take my train trip to California!

Your list made me think about my life and choices. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I better decide soon as I am on the downhill slope. As Marta says, Carpe diem.

I'm definitely a "carpe diem" type guy. Maybe that's why some of my life choices didn't pan out--I was too much so. And there's still plenty of time for you!

There is an old saying, "Life is what you make it." Life is full of choices, some you make, and some are made for you by life events beyond your control. But don't be so glum — you made some good ones! Carpe diem: Seize the day; enjoy the present, as opposed to placing all hope in the future.

We're lucky to be able to make choices. Some work out, some don't. I didn't women in my life!

That's pretty cool, the breakdown. I know I have wanted to be some things, then when I got close I was like hmmm, no thanks! We shall see what ends up being.

I suppose we all have a "wannabe" list of some sort, especially if we have ambitions.
