Toxic Sugar

60 Minutes Sunday evening, had a feature about sugar (all kinds). Most of us know it's not good for us, but we (I, anyway) didn't realize HOW bad it is!

Just that morning, I made a pecan (w/ blueberries) pie, and I was going to have a piece later that evening. Boy, did I ever feel guilty.

Anyway, sugar does more than make you gain weight. We know it increases your risk for type 2 diabetes.

In addition, so the doctor on the show insists, cancer may be related to sugar intake. Research and testing seems to be indicating sugar is the cause of many diseases, shortening our life expectancy. Much more work needs to be done to directly make these links.

Nonetheless, sugar appears to be, in their words, TOXIC--more so than ever imagined. I ate half the piece of pie I was planning on eating. I'm closely examining my cereal box lables for sugar content. Like salt (for my high BP), it's time to become ever vigilant of where my sugar comes from.

I love chocolate and sweets, so I don't like this "discovery" one bit!

I once read an article about how bad sex was/ could be but you can bet that it did not encourage me to become celibate. Everything is bad for you in large quantities. The key to healthy living is not to avoid them but MODERATION. I know you want to live a long time, but how rewarding will that long life be if you eliminate everything that could be bad for you?

True, but if you know something is bad for you, why keep doing it (like smoking)? Speaking of which, how are you doing with that little habit?

I agree with gapeach -- everything in moderation. Don't worry too much. You lifestyle is far too healthy to make you so susceptible to the occasional "bad" treat.

Trouble is, I treat myself too often--at least in my own opinion.

Republican based counter, at that.

since becoming diabetic I have started reading the labels on food. I have been amazed at some of the sugar content of different things!

I think the public is becoming more aware of the dangers in food. Whether we do anything about it or not, is another question! Looks like you are. Hurray for you!

The point is to stay away from sugar additives in commercially prepared, pre-packaged foods, all commercially sugared soft drinks and totally stay away from high fructose corn syrup. Keep making your own stuff like you do and you'll have no worries. And dark chocolate is a health food!

So are pecans and blueberries! That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!

Just about every brand of cereal has sugar,Corn syrup and many more.I was out buy this morning and cannot find any boxes of cereal without sugar.
Good luck.We have sugar in everything.corn syrup, sugar etc.
This is getting to be a nuisance and yes I saw this on 60 min about the sugar and very hard to find sugar free cereal.Yes,I am repeating myself and just want to make a point there.
Sugar free candy, wrong sorbitol is another word for sugar or sweetener
Nothing is sugar free.Only if you give all this up and the food.Sugar here and sugar there.
White flour is bad, white rice is bad etc.You got the message

Just about any processed food that's white is bad. I try to avoid canned and boxed foods--those one finds at the food pantry! Little wonder people that frequent them or use food stamps appear overweight. It's bad food. Thanks for your insight.

As you know the key is moderation, however, there is nothing better than a Dairy Queen Heath Bar Blizzard on a hot summers day.
comment by gapeach on Apr 4, 2012 10:15 AM ()
Hi Nancy! I love Heath bars! How can I be a "good boy" when treats like that are available?

I am with the dude on this one... Everything is bad for us to some degree. Don't worry TOO much about it just yet. Besides, you mainly eat natural foods, don't you? The occasional sugary treat won't hurt ya.

"Occasional?" Everything is relative, but I try to limit my sugar and eat good foods. Still, scary.

Waiting for the counter. It always happens. Someone will issue the results of their tests and data that swings it the other way, probably sponsored by the sugar cane farmers. Oh well.
