Galloping

Not that anybody cares, but here are the results from a recent Gallop poll asking adults about how they see themselves religiously.

Very religious: 40%
Moderately religious: 28%
Not at all religious: 32%

While still outnumbered, we non-religious Americans compose a fairly high percentage of the population.

State-wise, Mississippi leads the pack of Southern states in the "very religious" category (59%), with only Utah (57%) being the exception in the top ten.

Vermont claimed the lowest "very religious" state with 23%, closely followed by New Hampshire, Maine and Mass.
Vermont also tops the "non religious" states (58%), N.H. (Fredo) 52%.

My state's (IN) percentages were 45, 27, and 28 respectively.
It's nice to know I'm among friends, even if we are in the minority. Reassuring. And, we're gaining!

Enjoy the first week in April! Get out and about (on foot).

I was born Catholic, received my communion.
But the church gave me nothing.Did not have any feelings what so ever.
The rest of my family were truly one.Guess I missed out being the baby in the family.

I'm not sure being the "baby in the family" had anything to do with your lack of Catholic faith. You just saw the light!

"Not at all religious" does not necessarily mean one does not believe in God. For many it just means they do not practice or preach their beliefs.

As is the case with most surveys/polls, the questions are poorly worded or weakly defined. Point well taken.

I have my own spirituality. Not sure how I would answer the poll question.

I repeat what I said to John (below). And I'm not condemning anyone, just for the record.

Poor Kristy... I'm also a recovering Catholic... Many people find it difficult to get away after they have been indoctrinated.

Anyway, I know a few people who got sober over the years and wanted to join a church. Many sober people consider ourselves "spiritual, but not religious". When I use the term, it's in a humanistic way, with nothing to do with "supernatural" or anything like that. The way the question is asked is very important. I've seen how some people answer a version of it and some of what people say is (forgive me) laughable. Some of the newly sober people were more interested in the social aspects of church and chose churches that focused more on that than dogma. I like the social aspects of it myself, but I'm not going to services and acting like a hypocrite, so I pass.

I have trouble with the meaning of "spiritual". If the root is "spirit", then that smacks of something supernatural. Even "religious" is confusing. Ah, definitions. An we all have our own stories to tell.

To be expected. But when I attended the Reason Rally, I felt in the majority!

Soooo I would consider myself non religious, although I was born and raised Catholic and do believe in a God. I guess it depends on how the question was posed, because if anyone asks me if I am religious I would def say No. Happy April!!!

Good point. Believing in god vs. being religious are really two different things.
