Days of Summer

Today, April 6, my mother, Dorothy Pauline Silverthorn, was born in 1918. She died of cancer in 2001. I miss her.

I titled this post the way I did because, despite the date, it seems like summer. I've been doing all the things I do two months early. Of course, it's due to the incredible weather we've been having. I did have to cover up some plants last night with a predicted frost. That's okay. No harm done.

Anyhoo, doin's include getting my "summer" haircut, mowing yard, working garden up and planting, spraying fruit trees and weeds, etc.

I mentioned gathering bricks from a dilapidated one-room school house down the road. Well, I've been cleaning and laying them to extend my brick driveway. Tedious, but somehow fun.
I also cut a load of firewood yesterday and took time to hunt for mushrooms. Found 4 morels for supper! That's a month early for around here.

Of course, I've found time to play golf 4 days a week--jogging or walking, if not golfing. Just think, I could be in a classroom right at this moment! Life is good.

My mother has been gone for twenty-five years. I still think of things to ask her, that only she would know.

I planted peas, potatoes, radishes and spinach today. Thanks for your potato tip. I am taking a chance.

Where are you going?
reply by boots586 on Apr 8, 2012 2:42 PM ()
You're welcome. My potatoes have popped up already! Peas are 3" tall. I even have a tomato plant about one foot tall! I keep a bucket handy in case of a freeze (this week?). I'll be in your neck of the woods on the 18th. Amtrak Union Station layover. Post on it soon.

You're wishing this atheist a Happy Easter? I know. It's like saying Merry Christmas. I am disappointed no one invited me for Easter dinner!

Retaining good memories of your mom is the best healer.

She loved the Spring, although she never was the "out-doorsy" type. I got that from my father.

I was in a big box hardware the other day and a woman near me asked a clerk if they had any Tomato plants yet. The clerk said that it was far too early and if she planted any they would surely die in the next frost. The gal replied, "Are you kidding? Go outside and feel it! It's in the seventies!" They just don't know, do they?! LOL

I planted a "volunteer" tomato plant the other day. I put a bucket over it whenever we have frost/freeze warnings. It's doing well. Ripe by July 1?

Yes I am enjoying this weather, but I am not ready for bug season I must admit! I am sorry about your mom.

Ah, but the birds are enjoying the insects. Love watching my bluebirds.

Too energetic: sprained hand, bruised thigh, bad back! I keep forgetting about my age.
