Food Stats

If you read my recent "About Me" quote, you may have observed the author and her book that I read recently. I don't necessarily recommend it, but it had some interesting information. For example:

95% of all fruits and vegetables are sold (and bought) in supermarkets (Walmart leading the way).

The average home dinner travels 1500 miles from source to plate. A tomato takes 2 weeks (no wonder they're picked green).

For every dollar spent on fruit (say an apple), only 18 cents goes to the farm ($0.82 to marketing, distribution, bigwigs, etc.).
For veggies, farms get 21 cents.

40% of all U.S. food produced goes uneaten (for a variety of reasons). Whatever happened to "Clean your plate--millions of Chinese are starving" we were told as kids?

Americans spend 42% of their food budget eating out (restaurants). Chips, coke, beer, candy (and other snacks) don't figure in. I bet the percentage is well over half!

Eating out costs nearly 5 times more than eating at home.

13% of a household income is spent on food.

Applebee's meals use processed (pre-packaged) food, not fresh. Disgusting to read this. (No "chefs" needed, just someone to assemble and nuke.) Glorified McDonalds.

Farm laborers and employees of the food industry are getting screwed, the former less than minimum wage (but not on paper). Management reaps profits (t'was ever thus).

Support your local farm markets. Buy fresh, naturally produced fruits and vegetables. Quit supporting the big chains. It's the right thing to do.

I haven't heard of that book. Have you read "The China Study"? It scares me. I'm leaning more and more over to vegetarian/vegan.

Our farmer's market is on Sunday mornings beginning in June. Lots of things there-knife sharpener, honey sellers, bread sellers, meat and cheese purveyors, as well as the fruit and veggie stands. Sometimes face painters for the kids. Musicians, too, anyone who wants to sit in.

When I was growing up, the Europeans were starving. My friend had starving Armenians.

Wow--large market! Sounds similar to ours (Laf.) I loved walking through one in Hilo, HA a couple of years ago. Quite unique.

Yup, we have a farmer's market on the courthouse square on Wednesdays. It lasts about 2 months, then the product becomes apples, pumpkin, and other late stuff. Very short season.

Could probably buy veggies at local produce markets, but everything else is in a chain store. It's just easier to do one-stop shopping. When I was a kid, Greeks were starving, according to Mom.

Convenience is vital, esp. with gas prices.

We have such a short growing season around here that it's necessary to buy at the grocery store. Donna buys "grape tomatoes" or other small varieties, but I won't touch'em. Not only because of the price, but because of the taste. I grow all sizes and eat the big ones sliced with a bit of salt until I'm "tomatoed out" at the end of the season... Ah, yes, spring is coming (again)!

Surely you have a farmers market semi-nearby. Of course, they're only good for summer time. But it beats Walmart produce.

I looooove farmers markets, and I plan to frequent them once they return. Applebees --- I went to a grand opening of one, and when I got my plate the veggies were still in a bag. That gave it away for me.

Still in the bag? Oh my! Well, that's how they come from the "factory"! I can't imagine. Good for you to support your local farmers market.

Support local food purveyors and farmers' markets! I do!

I know you do, and we, in the business, greatly appreciate it!

I always support local farmers here.Your right they hardly get anything for their effort.
No we very seldom eat out if any.I enjoy eating at home then going out.
Some people need to socialize and think that is why most people go out.
They need this as for me I do not need this.If I was going to socialize visit SPCA and walk the dog.
comment by fredo on Apr 8, 2012 9:28 AM ()
Most of my socialization comes from my family or golfing. At least when you DO go out to eat, you have Mike. I hate eating alone, which is one reason I don't (besides the food and expense).

Not so sure that Florida farmers take as little on the dollar as farmers from other states. Agriculture in Florida is protected. One cannot publish or broadcast negative comments about Florida farmers or farming practices without paying astronomical penalties. It is also forbidden to photograph fields and workers. That law keeps me from photographing/painting Florida farm workers since I did that strawberry field painting.

Yeah, I'm with Boots. What's up with that? By the way, did you ever sell that strawberry fields painting?

What a lot of censorship. Why is that? Are conditions so bad they don't want people to know or what? Who says it is forbidden? Just very curious.
