Two Things

Forgive me for combining two subjects in one post.

I've written about this before, but permit me to reiterate. It concerns eating slowly.

At that dinner I went to a couple of nights ago, I watched in amazement at the speed at which all the voracious eaters, women included, attacked their food. Plates were stacked with food, the trough open.

My table was in the first third to go through the buffet line. However, by the time the last third cleaned their plates, guess who was still eating? In fact, the tables were all cleared, and the speaker started his spiel before I was finished! I really tried to eat quickly, but there I was, the lone cowboy, still eating (an average portion of food).
I was embarrassed, but I cleaned my plate like I was taught.

One reason I'm not overweight is that I chew, not inhale, my food. I savor every bite. At home, I frequently re-heat my plate in the microwave. I also work a crossword puzzle while eating. That makes me put down my fork while I chew. No TV, either. They say, eating in front of a mirror helps, but I won't go that far (although I do have window reflection).

The second subject regards the presidential debate(s), which I didn't watch. I understand the need for debates. It's good to have the two candidates "face off". But words are meaningless. Deeds and accomplishments (history) are the keys. Not all great presidents or scientists or writers or athletes are wonderful speakers. Not even good teachers. Some great speakers became dictators and murderers.

So what if Romney "won" the first debate? Look at his record and political philosophy. Yet the gullible public will swoon and be swayed at what and how he presented his case. Big mistake! One more month of this madness! I can only survive by ignoring it all (best I can).

I ate fast when I was younger but take my time now because I choke if I don't pay strict attention and chew well.

I sometimes think about what would happen if I choked here at home. No one around to do the Heimlich.

Smart fellow. Be aware of what's going on in politics, but be wary and avoid controversy.

I was always the last to leave the table when I was a kid but that's probably because my dad told me I couldn't leave until I'd eaten everything and I was a picky eater. Until my babies were old enough to get it themselves I had to eat fast for the few minutes I actually got to sit at the table. Now I get to relax and enjoy my food.
No comment of the politics.

Funny thing, compared to my own father, I'm a veritable freight train while eating!!!!

Sir?how about that.Sir Randall.
Yes a lot of folks inhale the food.Mostly the young ones. Some older but not too bad.
Also a lot of greed.

I like "sir"! All of the dinner attendees were over 50 yrs old. They ALL snarfed. The 3 couples at my table never said a word while they forked it in their maws.

Ah what good habits you have sir!
And the debates. sigh. it's sad that while I like Obama even I can't stand to hear them go back and forth about stuff that never seems to happen.

Most debates are a farce. But the public seems to eat them up. Curiosity is a horrible disease!

Observation:
For two years Willard Romney tried and tried to convince the Tea Party Republican base how 'conservative' he was. In the debate he tried to convince the viewers how 'moderate' he was. What a flip-flopper! I can't believe anything the guy says. He acts and sometimes even sounds like Richard Nixon!

And if only he'd wipe that silly, smirky, smile/grin off his face.

You're so very right about eating slowly and chewing your food. I've learned that too. Aside from the digestive benefit, why not enjoy every bite, right? As for presidential politics, madness is a good description of it all!!

And now the Republicans claim the new jobless report is a conspiracy!! What deadheads.

Ever try closing your eyes while you chew instead of being distracted by a crossword? I had the experience in an undergraduate course on perception, and it does (I'll let you decide how) influence the dining experience.
Too much to say about the debates in this little box, but I will say that I agree with your statements. One unfortunate aspect that I will comment on is the misinterpretation of the President's behavior. Rmoney was described as energetic and a few other adverbs where I'd prefer hyper, but the President would be expected to appear bored with the experience. ":::Sigh::: I have to listen to this windbag for an hour and a half"... but even liberals got it wrong.

What little I saw (during commercial breaks on the show I was watching) confirms what you're saying. I noticed on the following day, while campaigning, Obama was using a "teleprompter" and talked quite differently. He's just not a good extemporaneous speaker--too bad.
