The S**t Will Hit the Fan

Oh, I love it, I love it! Already, the local TV news stations are revving up the controversy about to occur.

Indianapolis, along with Houston, are the "targets" of a billboard campaign from the "Center for Inquiry". The message is that (and I'm paraphrasing) life is good without religion. You can lead a happy and moral life without a god. Oh yes, the s**t will hit the fan!

So yesterday, not only did I join the national organization, but I joined the Indiana chapter. I already belong to Freedom From Religion Foundation, but what the heck, the more the merrier. We nonbelievers need to support our "church of reason".

Americans come from a long line of protesters and abolishionists and protectors of human rights. Those that fought for religious freedom, against slavery, for women's rights, gay rights, civil rights, Union rights, etc., are our heroes for human dignity. They were up against tremendous odds. Wars and riots and murders have often been the results of the battles for and against the repressed.

The religious community will undoubtedly decry the billboards and their messages. They will again proclaim (wrongly) our country was "founded on Christian principles".
They will again protest the "anti-Christ" movement, and insist "heathens" can't possibly live a moral and happy life without "God".

So I proudly support the Center for Inquiry with my donation(s) to get its message out. Anybody with me on this?

This is a small town near us and want to put the billboard on a busy highway. They did not liked the idea in fear of the brigh light from the neon sign will blind them.?Isn't this weird.Anway they barely defeated this.

For a man that loves Kansas, you are sounding sensible today.

Every once in awhile, I come to my senses! And hey, I've been to Oklahoma. I don't see that you have much to brag about there!

Count me in. History has tried many times to overwrite why the Pilgrims left Europe for the wild and unknown new world. They didn't come here to found a Christian nation. They came here to get away from religious persecution. My chum has written a good theoretical study of why the right wing is so against education. His thesis is that they know that the higher one goes on the learning ladder, the less that person subscribes to myth and religious beliefs. So their answer is to dumb down education.

I'm not so sure your friend's thesis is a thesis, but a fact. It's been shown that greater intelligence (mostly in education) is related to reason. I still can't figure out why the Isaac Newtons of the world associated with superstitions and balderdash (alchemy, in his case).

Not with you at all. But you are still my friend.

Likewise. Some of my best friends are and have been ministers! I've never understood why. Who's trying to convert who? Maybe it's common respect.

All people in this country are free to believe in any faith tradition or no faith tradition. I think zealots of all kinds have to remember that.
comment by marta on Mar 4, 2011 12:05 PM ()
Thankfully, we have individuals (and groups) that counter the zealots. Not that they (the zealots) will listen or change, but that the populace will take notice and decide for themselves what or who is right.

You know I'm with you on this one. It is heartening to see there are reasonable people fighting the tide of pervasive religious proselytization that goes on at every level. As fredo says, you can be spiritual, but that doesn't mean JC and a white-robed Heavenly manifestation are managing things. In any case, if they are, they're messing things up big time.
comment by tealstar on Mar 4, 2011 10:56 AM ()
Big time is right! I love freedom of speech. I'm still in shock that all but one Supreme Court justices agreed (in that recent decision ruling for that church that rallies at funerals).

I do not believed this and with you on this one.
Do I believe in God?no,but do believe in spirit.
someone here try to get a bill board up for everyday prayer.
This is done in Neon Light.Every day they will be a new prayer every day for the motorist to see this. But they turned it down.
Thanks goodness.I do not want anyone to tell me who do I believe.
Like I said. The spirit.Yes it will hit the fan and hope for an update on this.I am only Catholic by birth.

Who is "they" that nixed the prayer billboard--the city? Can they do that?
reply by solitaire on Mar 5, 2011 6:41 AM ()
Not really, but I think it's great you are so enthusiastic about it!
comment by kristilyn3 on Mar 4, 2011 7:36 AM ()
Well, it was really a rhetorical question anyway.

Not me. I did, however, refuse to participate in an event for the American Heritage Girls. Teaching that the only way to morality is through accepting Jesus as one's savior was a bit much for me. I am, however, not against religion- just fundamentalist doctrines. We have all noted the decline in morality, particularly in our youth. If religion can aid in restoring a moral compass, I will not oposse it- just the fundamentalist groups that would have us turn back history.

"IF religion can aid..."-- never substantiated. This is a complex issue based on socio-economic conditions. But studies have shown that children raised is non-theistic homes are no more likely to be immoral than those "church-goers". Too bad we don't live closer together--we'd have some lively discussions!
