It was 20 years ago (March 3, 1991) that Rodney King was beaten nearly to death by four Los Angeles policemen.
King was a punk kid, 20 years old, always in trouble, fleeing the police in a 100 mph chase. The rage in the policemen's assault was videotaped for all the world to see. It was an ugly and vicious attack.
The policemen went to trial with a jury of no blacks. All but one were acquitted (hung jury for the one). Riots (Watts) ensued, with 50 deaths resulting.
The following year, the "hung jury" cop (plus another one, for reasons I don't remember), was convicted of assault, this time, with two blacks on the jury. Jubilation! King was awarded 3.8 million dollars!
Three years later, O.J. Simpson was found innocent (by jury) of murder(s), more than likely with the memory of riots in mind.
Rodney King, 20 years later (from a CNN special), is doing well. He's articulate, physically in shape, happy, and engaged (to one of the former black jurors!). However, he still battles alcoholism, nightmares, and gambling. He's been shot at (wears a bullet-proof vest). And he's broke! Squandered away all his money. No job because of his unreliability and criminal history.
