Another Scorcher

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (vinyl, of course), it's going to be another hot one today--over 95. Oh yes, and dry.

There's not much I can do in the yard and garden. Too dry for weeds or mowing. I just try to keep things watered. I save my sink water for flowers and flush not as frequently as usual. This all precaution in preventing my well from going dry. Probably nothing to worry about.

I drove to Lafayette yesterday (20 mi) to do some "shopping". Gas prices rocketed to $3.96 at every single station. Collusion? It WAS nearly a dollar less per gallon in some places. Holy fumes!

Anyway, I bought some new golf shoes, desperately needed (at Dicks). I tried to find American made, but no luck. After computer research, I saw that Red Wing and Dawg were made in America, and that Kmart sold Dawg. But my local Kmart didn't carry them.
Salt block for my water softener (Rural King). Then Aldi for groceries. The traffic and heat (despite AC) was enough for me. Little wonder I hate to go shopping in the "big city".

Big day tomorrow (Sun). More on that after the fact.

Also hot here and can't complete a full walk or bike ride without heading home in distress. (Of course I should start out before 8 a.m., then I'd be okay.) Ed said a main reason we bought this house, besides all of its attractions, was because it was connected to city sewage and water system. I see his point. Finally, I can't imagine any time in my life when I would be desperately in need of golf shoes, but I applaud your dedication. I once traveled 30 miles to get a pair of custom made pointe shoes, double shank, wide box. There you go. They were terrific. Those were the days.

Ninety+ again today. This is our 40th day this summer with temps 90 or above. We had 5 days that were in the 100s. We may get a little rain on Thursday. I'll try to send some to you.

FYI: The mid-west heatwave, apparently the worst in over 50 years, made BBC headlines today.

Wow! Sorry it will raise your food prices.

That's great that you at least looked for American made shoes. I hadn't ever thought of that I guess. I live in my Teva's during the summer. I wonder where they are made? Time for a google search.

I wore them for the first time today and didn't like them. You can never tell from one fit in the store. So back they go.

Looks like gas is up everywhere, although not as bad here (yet) Went from $3.63 to 3.69 in minutes, but it seems to have stopped there (for now). So far only one house at 1900 feet had a dry well, but that is probably due to what they drilled. We're dry, but not as bad as most and not that far below average rainfall. Just need to space it out a bit. Two inches in a day.. well, you know...

An inch of rain overnight saved the shallow rooted plants, but the trees are still stressed. No more rain in sight.

We got rain today finally. It should be headed for you now. Our gas went to $3.99 - $4.19 this week. There is a gas shortage in our area. There was a leak at a refinery in IN, I believe. A lot of oil was lost and the refinery had to shut down so there you go-our prices go up.

Thanks for the rain!! I got about an inch over night. Welcome relief--and from the heat, also. Hopefully, gas prices will begin to drop, albeit slowly.

Wow. I wonder how my sisters are handling the heat. I'd better give them a call.

We had the hottest July--actually month--on record, 8.6 deg above average. Still, it's nothing compared to Oklahoma. Sympathize with Jeremy and Jeri. And, you're talking to your sisters?

Gas prices here are $3.66 to $3.89 today. I leave tomorrow for Chicago to visit my dear sister-in-law, who is in hospice at home, at the end of her fight with ovarian cancer. I expect to see a very parched landscape out the bus window.

Have a safe trip. Northern Ind. has received more rain, so it might not look too awful.

A friend told me yesterday that he drove from Fort Wayne down to Indy on Sunday and the entire Indiana landscape was scorched brown. The only green he saw was in the trees. The center of the country and some spill-over states are going to have the most disastrous harvest year since the dust bowl era. One reason gas prices are not hanging tight to crude oil prices is the corn disaster. Ethanol prices are being jacked much higher.

I did get about an inch of rain early this morning. Might have saved my garden. Refilled my rain barrels. Still, we need another 6" to really soak into the deep ground.
