Ryder Cup

The headlines in today's sports section was "GAG GIFT". Pretty harsh words, but apparently true. I'm referring to the U.S.'s collapse in yesterday's Ryder Cup (golf) matches with Europe.

But, you know, I, for one, am not upset. For one thing, I'm no jingoist. I thought the fans in Chicago were outrageously rude throughout the competition. They booed the Europeans, kept chanting U-S-A, and were just plain out and out boars (bores?).

When Tiger missed that final 3' putt, I said to myself, "rightly deserved"--if not for him, for the obnoxious fans. They were totally stunned--but weren't we all?

Give the Europeans kids credit. They played and putted extremely well, under a lot of pressure. The Americans tried their best, but succumbed to that same pressure. I know the feeling. It's not easy to control the nerves standing over an important shot, especially when it's for the pride of the whole country.

In Cub terms, "wait 'till next year" (actually in two for the Ryder Cup).

Two thoughts. First I understand that the Ryder Cup, unlike most golf tournaments where they whisper and talk in hushed voices, encourages rooting loudly. But not to the point of rudeness. Second, it bugged me no end that the announcers kept talking about the Ryder Cup being in Chicago. It was not in Chicago; it was in Medinah. We are proud of our little towns here.

And the name here is Chicagoland.

To you and all the other suburbs in the world, yes, there's pride in small commuter burgs. But to the world, it's just one gigantic megalopolis, all lumped into one name.

I didn't watch any of this nor know it was going on but it reminds me of Eagles fans.

Philadelphia fans are notorious! But I think it's universal in America.

yes, it is dismaying how we have lost the idea of sportsmanship when that is what sports is supposed to be about. Years ago used to go to Knicks basketball games in New York. When the Knicks played Boston, it was always WW III. Vicious.

What is supposed to be good clean fun has turned an ugly cheek.

Yes, we have become a nation of bad mannered people, from children who are never taught restraint and who never learn the meaning of the word 'consequences,' to 'entitled' adults who believe no one has the right to tell us what to do. Yes, we are obnoxious and don't like people who point that out to us. We are bullies. The Europeans were not surprised by our conduct. That is how we are viewed outside the US by other nations world-wide.

Agreed. Are we reversing our "walk softly and carry a big stick" attitude? We're certainly not talking softly. I wonder how the world looks at our political battles?

Yes,American can be very rude and this hurt the country some.
I know a lot of them get out of hands but no need of this.
Sure,we all like to win but have a good time with our countrymen.
They play well and outsmart them. What is the big deal.Going around hitting those little balls
(Kidding)understand this.

No worse than hitting a fuzzy yellow ball over a net!! But yes, I think the two sides have carried the rivalry a bit too far.

Golf ought to be at least a misdemeanor...

Since the Ryder Cup expanded to include all Europe instead of just Great Britain the US list of victories has sharply diminished. Rightly so, I suppose, as the Europeans seem to have the better players and four out of the last six World Number One golfers are European. Oh, I forgot... most of the top 'European' golfers reside in Florida. Loved the Cup this year. Such drama! Congrats to the lads and to Jose Maria for picking the right players as his Captain's picks, something I will bet Davis Love is rethinking now.

There is so much pressure. But, they make the big bucks. I wonder how they've slept since then?
