Hoagy

I played a couple of Hoagy Carmichael songs on the piano last night and thought I'd post an article about him. "Old timers" will remember him.

Hoagy (1899-1981) was born and educated (IU) in Bloomington, IN. He actually had a law degree. But music was his passion.

One of his earliest and most famous compositions was "Stardust". His songs seemed to fit his personality--sort of philosophical.

He wrote (not in any order): Georgia on My Mind, Skylark, Up a Lazy River, Old Buttermilk Sky, Lazy Bones, Two Sleepy People, The Nearness of You, Small Fry, Heart and Soul (the piano "duet" so many young people play), and many, many more.

He went to Hollywood to write for and act in movies--and later television. But his roots were in Indiana.

On a personal note, Hoagy was an influence on my father, an IU student from 1936-40. Dad was a jazz pianist, also. He worked his way through college playing piano with big bands and small combos. (My mother sang with these groups.) Hoagy became famous--my father not so much!

When Hoagy got married and had a boy (1940?) they named Randy, my parents thought that was a grand name. Hence, Randy is my name (actually, Randall, but thank goodness, not "Hoagland")!

"Google" Carmichael for much more information on the life and songs of one of my favorite composers. And have a great day!

Whereas I am very good looking but can't carry a tune--oh well!

Love his songs. He also wrote A huggin' and a chalkin', a silly thing but memorable. My favorite, Up the Lazy River. Randy is a good name.

Another favorite is "I get along without you very well", not to mention, "In the cool, cool, breeze in the evening". And thanks.

I remember him so I guess I am telling my age. Since I'm a georgia peach, guess which song is my favorite.

All Georgians should bow down to Hoagy! He did write "Can't get Indiana off my Mind", but it never became famous like "Back Home Again in Indiana". Still, a great song.

How special to be named after Hoagy's son. Mr. Tbend's parents didn't want him to have a name that could be diminutized like Mike to Mikey, but think about what his name turned out to be, it doesn't make sense.

I was teased about my name in the 8th grade, which made me feel a little ashamed throughout my life. I'm used to it now, of course.

I love Heart and Soul! Every time I hear it I'm humming it to myself for the next week.
Between Honeybugg's "Wiener" and your "Hoagy" I'm getting hungry.

Yes, it was (is) a cute song. And I can play both hands at the same time! No partner necessary.

I thought this was going to be about subs - spelled wrong... Hoagie.

No relation. You're too young to know him or his songs.

Aside from his music I loved his dry sense of humor--a very funny man

Funny in a droll sense. He realized he wasn't good looking. But, man, did he have talent!

I have always envied families that were musical. My mother and her two
sisters singing and playing the piano is a Sunday afternoon memory that
I will always cherish. None of the talent trickled down to us.

That's hard to believe. Surely your mother and aunts sang to you as a child? Maybe you're a late bloomer!

Yes,I remember him well.Loved the version of Skylark,Lazy Bones etc.
Those were great songs and music.Isn't that sweet where the name came from.
Your dad was a jazz pianist. That is so exciting. We need to talk more on this subject.A musical family there.

While I play the piano, I'm the dud in the family. I won't play in front of anybody. Try emailing me (again): jazzman@geetel.net
