On Having a Flat Belly

"Lose 1 percent belly fat a week". "One rule to a flat stomach". "How to get six-pack abs in 6 minutes--on your couch!"
We're obsessed with having those cover boy/girl bodies. And because two-thirds of America says the belly is the body part that they most want to change, we buy into books, ads, tips, etc., that promise to flatten our mid-sections.

True, bulging stomachs are unsightly, indicating obesity and a lack of will power to do something about it. More importantly, we know that belly fat is the most dangerous fat you can have on your body.

More so than other types of body fat, experts concur, belly fat has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

When I gain weight, guess where it goes and shows? I've gained about 5 lbs recently because, of course, more eats, less exercise. And , despite doing 1000 crunches each day (among other exercises), my belly swells up like a balloon.

The article which inspired this post says it's not crunches or some fancy machine that will flatten your stomach. It's as simple as losing weight--period. Of course, one has to eat less (or better), and exercise. I plan to continue my crunches as a form of exercise and to strengthen my abdominal muscles. Now, on to lose those 5 pounds and my bulging belly.

That's right. You can exercise your abdominal muscles all you want, but without losing the fat that lies under all your skin, they aren't going to show. At this point, I just want any of them to show.

Well, of course we all obsess over our bodies. You do something about it. One THOUSAND crunches???

As you know, in CA one needs to keep in shape because of the scanty clothing... well, I mean light clothing because of the heat...

Can't imagine a potbelly or even 5 lbs on your gut doing 1k crunches a day! Having hubs as a PTA, I'm aware of and practicing "core" exercises to strengthen my lower lumbar area. Eating responsibly w/exercise is the only way to lose it. Not the infomercials or gimmicks. Only thing that gets me are the products that "Oprah" or some other celebrity allegedly endorse... like the acaipure product. DON'T make the same mistake I did and order the "free" tablets! Now, I don't care WHAT Oprah endorses!

Well, you were always on my list of people here I would most like to meet, but now I am going to have to delay that pleasure to either after I join a convent and don a habit, or convert to Islam and cover myself in a burka.

There are all kinds of different shapes and sizes. I would like to be small boned and have a narrow frame but I have large bones. Eating right and exercising makes one healthy and that is very important.

I totally agree that the only way to fight belly fat is to simply loose weight! However, I do think that certain exercises will help flatten it. Not flatten the fat, but strengthening the deep abdominal muscles will pull the stomach in.

You're right Randy. Overall weight loss through healthy eating and exercise will reduce belly fat. My un-negotiable intake is butter on my toast in the morning and a glass of Pinot Grigio at night, and a tiny Milky Way (from the Halloween package) for dessert. If you allow some treats, it's easier to set limits.

O for my younger days when I could eat & drink whatever I wanted with impunity, gaining no weight whatsoever. Now, just looking at a bag of no-nos puts three to five pounds on me...
