Happy Earth Day

Perhaps someone else is posting an article about this, but as a former earth science teacher, I feel responsible for wishing everyone a Happy Earth Day today, April 22.

As I perpetually had posted on my school bulletin board, "Every Day is Earth Day". But, like National Prayer Day or Mother/Father's Day, we designate one "special" day to honor the significance of the subject.

I remember exactly what my science classes did 41 years ago to celebrate the first Earth Day. I think we've lost or forgotten the observance. There was nothing in today's newspaper about it.

What are you doing to "celebrate"?

Comments:

The Auxiliary participated in the Great American Cleanup scheduled around Earth Day. I think that is a great way to celebrate Earth Day even if most events- especially this year due to Good Friday, were scheduled before the actual date.

And? Did you participate? Probably busy with you paintings, and I don't blame you. I sometimes think people toss litter because they know someone else will pick it up.

It was kind of overcome by Good Friday. I remember the first one very clearly.

Yes, I noticed both events were on my calendar. Today's paper had pictures of Jesus portrayers being "crucified". Nothing on Earth Day (again). Sickening.

I had a great time volunteering at our wonderful botanical garden.
Happy Earth Day, Randy!

Wonderful! Good for you. I'm going for a walk today (yest was rainy and cold) with a trash bag in hand.

I've seen nothing locally, although I do think the trash pick up effort I was involved in at least twice had something to do with Earth Day. We are losing the planet.

Not only losing the planet, but the United States. I'm just finishing up Adrianna Huffington's "Third World America". What a sad state of affairs we're in. Politics and greed--the bottom line.

So what exactly did you do 41 years ago to celebrate? Last year Las Vegas casinos turned off the outside lights on the Strip for an hour to observe Earth Day (sort of lame, but it was something), this year I don't see any mention of it in the paper, just an article about the landfill is going to build an electric power plant fueled by gases from decomposing trash.

Good for Vegas landfill! We have a huge landfill 3 miles from my house, and there was talk about a generating plant, but it never happened.
My students cleaned up Diamond Bar, CA using donations to go to a wildlife sanctuary in Edmonton, Canada (of all places). I think we collected over $300. The local newspaper was supposed to come out, but never showed up.

Your right about that. They have lost it and so sad.
Last year the library issued blue bags to picked up the litter on the highway. She told me for some reason that they did not get too many volunteers to do this.I did this last year.
I have been doing my share not only on Earth Day but everyday.
Get the litter off the highway and sidewalks.
Maybe the school did not teach it this year.
It has been very quiet in the paper.
This is their generation.Do they want it?well they are too busy with their IPad,Anderoid etc.The Lazy Generation. You are so right.

I WAS pleased to see a bunch of kids cleaning litter along the highway somewhere between here and Utah (can't remember where). I keep my county road clean. No big deal. Keep up your good work!

I am going to transplant a pepper plant to celebrate.

The 6 blueberry plants I ordered came on Earth Day! I'll plant them today or tomorrow. Yum.

Happy Earthday to you--I am going out to eat some earth--join me?

We eat over 1000 lbs of dirt every day. Get it?

I have heard a lot about it today but mostly through facebook. Happy Earth Day! I think I shall have some wine to celebrate.

I too had wine to "celebrate", although by wine time, I'd forgotten about Earth Day!
