For those of you who have never heard of, or never read any of his books and essays, or never heard him speak, you have missed out on one of the great intellectuals of our time: Christopher Hitchens.
He died of esophageal cancer at age 62 (a heavy smoker).
Along with the late Carl Sagen, Hitchens was one of my heroes. His outspokenness was refreshing as he tackled many controversial subjects, especially religion.
In his best selling book, "God is Not Great" ("How Religion Poisons Everything"), Hitchens said "Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it." Amen, brother. This, along with "The Portable Atheist", are two books I actually bought (hardly library material in Bible thumping Indiana).
From what I saw on television, his personality was grating and sour. And intense. He had his beliefs (or disbeliefs). But he made one listen. He'll be missed.
