Great Reads

So where have I been the past 3 days? For one, I've been helping my son-in-law clearing trees where his house will sit. More on that in the future.
And, I've been grandson sitting. His regular watcher--my ex--is still recovering from knee surgery.

Plus, I've submerged myself during my "free" time reading.

So, I have two recommendations I strongly urge you to read.
1) "The Jefferson Project", by Thor Duffin. It's a novel, but with some fascinating ideas about how to tranform our nation into a working democracy (instead of what we currently have--party warfare). 5 stars.

2) "That Used To Be Us", by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum. "How America fell behind in the world it invented and how we can come back". They analyze the four challenges we face--globalization, the revolution in information technology, the nation's chronic deficits, and our pattern of excessive energy consumption.
It blasts our school failures, political stalemates, our resistance to change, and everything else that is the cause of our impending collapse as the most powerful and influential country on earth.
The big surprise is their solution!! I'm still stunned.

My reading turns more to fiction. I just finished "The Nineteenth Wife" that was interesting. Before that, it was a sci-fi called "Blasphemy".

I'm just the opposite. I'm thirsting for knowledge for some reason. Shrug.

The Help is written from the perspective of black house maid in 1960 Jackson, MS. A white lady gets fed up with the mistreatment of maids and wants to be a journalist. They write the book, changing the names of all involved and using a fictitious town, but it is evident to the residents that this book is about them.

OMG! THAT'S where I heard about "The Help". It's a movie. Since I don't do movies, I had forgotten. I didn't realize it was adapted from a book. Thanks.

Good grief, Forever Amber was published more than 60 years ago and you are just now getting around to it? It was also a movie with Cornel Wilde. We all read it for the seduction scene, so racy at the time.

I was only 8, 60 years ago. Besides, there are many classics I've never read.

Hi Martha. Have you read any good books lately? I want to read "Forever Amber" that CJ (redimpala) recommended.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will try the liberry.

I think you'll enjoy them. Both are supposed to "walk the middle ground", showing no partisanship to either political party. Read into it what you want.
