Cabin Fever Anxiety

I started to call my post title "Cabin Fever Blues", but I'm really not sad.

However, it's the dead of winter--cold, blustery, 5" of snow on the ground--and I'm pretty fed up with it. And if I hear "the snow is falling down" or "when it's all said and done" one more time from a TV weatherperson, I'm going to scream! (Why can't they simply say, "It's snowing...", or "When it's all over..."?)

Back to my point(s).

I haven't left the house in 5 days--and won't for two more when I have an optometrist date (annual check). Oh, I get outside to get a wheel barrow full of firewood for my furnace (and man, am I going through the wood quickly!), and to go to the mailbox. But I haven't gone anywhere in my truck. I might not be able to anyhow.

Because of this so-called "cabin fever", I've had the urge to look at the road atlas and "map quest" for vicarious trips throughout the United States. My recent Backpacker magazine has fueled my imagination with great hiking places. The warm, sunny photos are enticing.

Planning for real (or imaginary--maybe future) trips is half the fun. I'm headed for the Florida Panhandle (Mexico Beach area) in 9 days (weather permitting down I-65 and side roads). So I've mapped out my route and scoured the internet for places of interest, both on my way and at my final destination. I like "off the beaten path" routes, but I'm eager to get to "home base". I've also done the same thing with my April trip to Utah (Wilderness Volunteers). LET'S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!

I the meantime, I'm hunkered down with soothing food--hot oatmeal with thawed strawberries for this morning's breakfast, a butternut/pecan pie, chili, etc.--you know, comforting food. I'm going to bake a cherry cheesecake this afternoon (from my really ancient frozen cherries. I won't admit how ancient!). And I'll return to perusing maps for my next venture (and adventure).

Did I mention my Spring seed catalogs are arriving?!!!!!!

I hear ya! I love the snow and the lovely look of winter out the windows, but the cold keep me indoors. Wintertime finds me baking, cooking soups and warming meals, homekeeping, reading, cozy activities, writing, crafting.... Like my cats, I relish sunbeams when I find them. I do miss visits to the nearby botanical garden, and await a slowly awakening spring, still weeks away.

With snow on the ground, it's hard to think about gardening and landscaping (septic system ground). And since one can only eat so much (without going overboard), one can only bake and cook so much. My freezer doesn't empty out because I keep adding "goodies" to it! I have been playing the piano more, however. That's a good thing.

I have missed you, Mister.I didn't leave the house last week for seven days. I started to get scared that I was turning into Julian.I'm going to sit and enjoy getting caught up on your posts, now.

That's a nice thing to say ! But now I'll have to go back to my old posts to read your comments (if any)! I was wondering where you had gotten to. So many mybloggers bloggers simply drop off the face of the earth. I figured you were one of them.

AZ. we here get grumpy when it gets cold and gray sky, a few days, well OK, but longer, look out! I miss the backyard birds, doing my in place walking on the back deck, yoga and Chi Kung out on the deck. Now I just bundle up go out front in the sunny part, but I don't have my personal space and my routine is a muck. deal with it! Summer... 115...is coming..so......I know we are thankful for all that we have. Enjoy the goodies, lucky you, home grown.

I guess we both have our extremes. As I write this, I'm watching cardinals, bluejays and a red-headed woodpecker flitting around searching for food. Like you, I try to make the best out the cold and snow.

If it is not dirty and slushy from city traffic, I cannot imagine ever getting tired of snow. Cold is something else. But a snowy street on a sunny day is beautiful.

If nothing else, it makes one appreciate the melting and eventual return of green grass. I don't mind its stark beauty--for a while!

What part of Utah are you going to? I can give you some suggestions for most of the state as I live in Salt Lake but was raised in Moab.

All summer long!!! A good place to check out is goblin valley and the hole in the rock. Of course Arches and if you make it as far as Torrey, UT which is right by Capital Reef get dinner at Cafe Diablo....by far the best food I've ever had and I've traveled all over the world.

As it turns out, we'll be right close to Moab! We'll be camping on the Colo R (Big Bend campground, I think), doing tamarisk removal on BLM land (Negro Bill Wilderness). I've done 6 previous W.V. trips in Utah, and traveled extensively throughout the Southern half of the state (including 9 Mile Canyon Rd. south of Roosevelt--a real adventure!). I just love the red rocks and ancient Indian stuff. Do you like to camp and explore?

Yes, but do you act "fruity"? Saw a little of Ricky Martin on Oprah yest. He's gay, but not fruity. Know what I mean? Enjoy some hot oatmeal. It's good for you.

Wow, you are used to being out and about, and I will not leave my house for weeks and not give it a thought. This has to be hard on you.

Guess I'm surprised to read that you can stay at home for weeks. Saves on gas! Some people (like my stupid neighbor) has to be on the go every single day, even in blizzards. Not us, eh?!

I completely understand the 'cabin fever anxiety' syndrome!!! I was soooooo fed up with constantly looking at blinking 'snow'! That was a very long 6 -7 weeks!!! It eventually must have been depressing me (without my realizing it) because once January 1st came, I felt so 'jubilant' - Spring is on the horizon, sort of thing.
Just in case the 'cherries' are a tad 'past it', I have thoroughly enjoyed your company these last few months . . . . . . . . . . .

Around here, the beginning of the weather "upturn" is Jan. 20, a week away. Temps inch upwards. But it's still cold. Made my cherry thing--ate some--still kickin'! Good mix of sweet and sour.
