She would wait each day
For the arrival of the mail
And each week a letter arrived
Coming without fail.
At first the letters were light,
happy
Talking of the care packages being
a hit
She kept each and every letter
In a box with red hearts upon it.
But as the year passed
The letters became further apart
She started to wonder
Whether she was still in his heart.
His tone grew darker with each letter
he sent
Soon she became concerned
What would he be like
When and if he returned.
It wasn't until that moment
She allowed herself to think that way
She had been so positive
He'd return to her one day.
Soon the letters stopped
Still she waited, each and every day
She still wrote him
Unsure of what she should say.
She was sitting on her front porch
Days passed like years
Until that day he came up the walk
Her eyes filled with tears.
She could see
That he was crying too
But now they were together
And thats all she knew.
