Alive

Seeing life slip away
Right through his hands
Wasn't how he saw the future
Wasn't in his plans.
Should've expected it
Sometimes it's the way it goes
Just can't help it
It's the way the river flows.
You are leading the pack
Blind to those left behind
But then you realize you are left
in the dust
It's the hard truth you find.
Some accept and move on
Ready to fight another day
But others aren't so willing or able
Saying their life will be that way.
Wanting to rise from the ashes
To live, to love
Unshackled from their fears
To soar the heavens above.
Memories of childhood
No worries, no fears
Simple answers, no complex questions
A little love erased the tears.
We can still have our life
For all we strive
Remembering we have yet not passed
But we are still alive.

And then we become adults or are taught "Don't act like a baby." "You know better." "Behave!" ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As always a GREAT poem--whyohwhy aren't you sending them out to The New Yorker?????

I don't know which is as harsh...the first smack we got at birth, or the smack reality gave us as children.

This does a good job of reminding us that there is a watershed in our lives where we can look both forward and back. Younger people might not understand.
