Muslim Hair

So I got my hair did by my fave hairdresser today. She was running late, per usual, but I am used to it. She does an Ab Fab job and I love her anyways. :0) She told me the reason she was running late today was due to having to tend to a Muslim client she has every now and then. Apparently this client couldn't have her hair shampooed when it was supposed to be due to a male client being in the salon. No one but her husband is supposed to see her hair. Seriously? So my hairdresser waited it out and got her taken care of, then moved on to me. So I was bored while I was waiting when I had foils on my head and I was emailing my friend K. I told her this story and she was like WTF? If no one can see her hair why bother getting it done? That made me laugh OUT LOUD. For serious. What a good point! Anywho I thought the whole thing was quite interesting so I thought I would share. I dunno how Muslim women stay Muslim. I would run away ASAP!!! It's so limiting for women... and seriously - hair? No one can see a woman's HAIR? If men can't control themselves over hair then those men have a serious issue. But I guess that is something I already know.

Happy hump day peeps! :0)

There is probably some meat eater out there who is just incredulous that vegetarians don't eat meat, can't begin to understand it. One person's lifestyle is another person's awkwardness.

I try to live and let live as much as I can. I can't imagine any man going into a state of sexual arousal over hair and as Dottie says, maybe
they have other perks.

I just don't see the perks?

Their heads are exposed at home. I don't pity Muslim women except the ones trapped in fundamentalist societies--- the ones that were once free Muslims, but then the Taliban and other extremists took over their laws and governments. Despite the burkas and some of their practices, Muslim women are not without power. Every dime that a Muslim woman earns is hers- not family income, and Muslim men would consider it a grave insult if she contributed to household expenses. In free Muslim countries, the women build the hospitals, create charities, etc., or simply endulge themselves and it is not frowned upon. In free Muslim countries- like Syria- women are NOT required to wear burkas but do so anyway. For them, it is often a symbol of pride and a statement: "Whatever I am, I am NOT a sex object to be leered at or played with and taken advantage of." Also, they are not judged or valued by their appearance. I have Muslim friends, which is how I know.

interesting perspective! Thanks. I still don't think it's empowering though...

I have to agree with your friend. Why bother if no one but her husband can see her hair. Seems like a waste of time and money.

There are many thing in this world that I do not understand. So happy we have had such amazing women in our nations' history that have changed things for us for the better.

Well said lady, well said.

It takes centuries of women being told what the can and can't do before long it is natural to them.
I guess we live in a pretty good country after all, what do you think?
comment by saito56 on Aug 25, 2010 3:49 PM ()
I just can't imagine dealing with that... ya know? I think it's wonderful that we live in this country - now. I have to laugh at the 1950's textbook page my dad printed out and framed for my mom (on Valentines day no less) about how to prepare for your husband coming home from work. He told her it's never to late to learn.

"If men can't control themselves over hair then those men have a serious issue." Ok, so maybe I have a little control.

I certainly hope so!

Not only the hair but many things that they cannot do.
See how lucky you are. They are very faithful in their religion and very hard to make a change.I feel for them but that is their business.
No wonder Mike is always around when I have my hair done. But I do not have any.Oh!what do I know.

I am sure you have a few Fredo.
And yes, I can't even fathom being under that kind of control by men! UGS!
