Retirement Is Too Far Away

He's European ...

I was talking to my co-worker today who is from Albania, as is her husband. Sometime last month she was telling me how her in-laws were in town, and by the look on her face I could tell she wasn't super psyched, so I was like how long will they be staying with you? She replied a month and a half. I nearly died. A MONTH AND A HALF? Of in-laws??? Seriously? I think most Americans would die. She then told me that this was a short visit, apparently they usually stay for about 4 months. WHOAH. Can you imagine that long of a "visit" from in-laws?

Anyways, the point of my story is that her in-laws are leaving today. I asked her if she was ecstatic and she said she was but she wasn't because now her cooking duties would begin again. I was like huh? Cooking duties? She replied "He's european" which apparently means that he needs his dinner cooked from scratch every day, no leftovers. Seriously? I nearly hit the floor again. She can't use any boxes or anything pre made, it's all gotta be from scratch.

Can you imagine?

This got me to thinking about all the men who say they want a foreign bride... one who isn't Americanized... is that part of the reason? My co-worker was saying how hard it is to work, get dinner ready in time, keep the house clean, take care of the kids, etc. etc. etc. Doing it all alone and being happy about it? Maybe European is the way for some men to go. I certainly wouldn't stand for it...

If I am working full time as is he then I expect help. I don't think that's uncalled for... Luckily R is on board with that and is usually VERY helpful with everything, and even does things I ask him to like vacuum or whatever. He simply rocks.

On a completely unrelated note...

Last night we went to Noodles & Co because we had a coupon for a free meal (they just opened up a location right by where we live). I got a whole wheat pasta with tofu. What did R get??? Mac and cheese. :0)

It's not so much that he's European, it's that he's spoiled. It amazes me what some women will put up with! A good German woman would kick his ass out the door. Italian boys and men are specially spoiled. Italian single men live at home with their mothers way into their thirties and forties. Mama cooks, cleans and makes their bed. Don't marry a man like that!

Now I'll get mail! (address emails to jon@gotohell.org)

I consider any visit over one week to be moving in and house rules apply, like everyone taking turns with the cooking.

My son married a Filipino girl named Fiona. She is the sweetest perosn you ever wanted to meet. When Fi's parents came to visit, Fi's mother read Fi the riot act when her husband helped to wash the supper dishes. That was woman's work, and the older woman said that Fi should be ashamed of herself for letting her husband help.
Can you imagine?
The next time Fi's parents came to visit the newly-weds, Mary and I were also there. When it came time to do the dishes, Kyle pitched in again. Fi tried to stop him by saying, "My mom will get upset if you help with the dishes." Kyle countered with, "My mom will KILL me if I don't!"

Me and the microwave have a close personal relationship. Like I make everything from scratch on nights I work...NEVER!

Whoa about that stereotype! Not all Europeans are like that. Just the dominating sexist ones like here and everywhere. I know plenty of 30-something and 40-something American couples who are like that.

Part of the "time" thing is cultural and part is probably related to the distance involved. I think a lot of people take it for granted when their relatives are within a day or two distance or a short plane trip. If you get to visit family frequently and often, you probably don't think twice about just staying a weekend or a week -- if that long. The further it takes to travel and the less frequently you get to visit, the longer the trips seem to last.

Geez, you'd think she wouldn't have to have a full time job on top of all that. Bleck!
I wouldn't stand for it either.
