Tree Killers

I really don't prefer to kill things that don't need killin', but I made an exception today with one of the trees that was, according to its growth rings (observed after its demise) was doing quite well. In addition to the fact that the front-facing branches would have to be removed to accommodate the new garage, it was also getting tall enough that it blocked the sun for more than an hour every day in the winter--and winter last quite awhile around here.

The two pines needed to go, since they were heavily damaged by the fire, and aside from looking bad, their lives would have been shortened by the damage. The crew arrived at 8:30 sharp, as promised, and was finished by 1:30. Not bad for the amount of work done, including two dump truck loads of branches and trunks.

The two pines that needed their deaths hastened:

The third pine that happened to grow in the wrong place. It would have made a great Christmas tree. Too short for NYC, but nice just the same.

Relatively easy work when you have the right tools.

Interesting looking: I though about leaving it that way... then thought better of it.

We went to the ZBA the other night to request a variance to place the new garage closer than 10 feet off the property line. Naturally it's a bunch of bureaucratic nonsense: registered letters too all neighbors within 500 feet, notice in two local papers for two weeks before the public hearing.... Yup! I said public hearing--to put a garage on my own property when the only neighbor who can even see it has already agreed to it. That's our government at work.

One way or another, there will be a new building back there this summer, unless the money runs out--I just got the bill or the cleanup and repairs to the house. :::gulp:::

Happy summer!

Sorry you are having to cope with this.

It's a challenge, but that makes it fun. I just completed another challenge--getting a duplicate title for a mobile home from NYS with Chase bank listed as the owner. It took 7 months, but I told the person I was doing it for that I could do it, and I did. I think finding a live person to work with at Chase was the toughest part. She was in LA and everything needed to be done by fax and FexEx, and handled personally by her. Documents that go to her office are scanned and shredded, which was exactly what we couldn't have happen. But I got'er done!

That tree next to the shed really was too large, and it looks good with it gone. Tree work is expensive, but they have to buy all that equipment, and it really is good to get it done right and hauled off. I'd love to have one of those big chipper/shredders.

That nice open area is where the new garage will be. It will be much shorter than the tree was and hopefully won't look overpowering. So far, the work is going as I pictured it, so the outcome should be Ok too.

what you can and can't do with your own property seems to be a world wide trend

I have no problem giving a neighbor who would be directly affected the opportunity to express himself. In fact, I went to talk with the guy out of courtesy before I went to the ZBA. What I think is ridiculous is to put the issue in the paper and send certified letters to neighbors within 500 feet, even the ones on the other side of the state highway.

Money over variances must change hands a lot down here because stuff is going up that I know doesn't meet design code. One house built right up to their property line on both sides. Their a/c pad is on the roof. I have no respect for the management of the local government here. People say New York City is corrupt. They should try SW Florida. Good luck with your process.

Sometimes you have to wonder how some stuff gets done. I wasn't the offered the opportunity to grease any palms, but I wouldn't have even if the option was available. I'll build 10 feet in before somebody makes a profit!!

The public hearing is on 9 August. The ZBA meets after the hearing to decide, so it should be over in a month and the work should be completed by September.

Bureaucracy is crapola!

Yeah, the population of the entire town, spread out over who knows how many miles is 3400. Kind of sounds like Sarah Palin syndrome--Delhi is way too important in the scheme of things to let people build whatever they want, wherever they want on their own property!
reply by jjoohhnn on July 14, 2010 4:14 PM ()
Oh dont' even get me started on the zoning processes... It's been 3 years and R's barn paperwork is STILL sitting in the county over zoning crapola... I hope it goes much quicker for you!

The worst that can happen is we'll put the new building 10 feet off the property line. They can't stop us from doing that, so it's a matter of 6 ft. It will look better, and be a straight run from the driveway into the bay of the garage, but if it has to 6 feet over, that's what will happen. I won't let this process drag on.
