Retrun from 4c Camp for Adults

Well, actually, I returned from 4C Camp for Adults last Sunday. Had a great time again, and the weather was considerably better this year. Last year we had to leave on Saturday after dinner (instead of Sunday afternoon) due to Hurricane Irene. I should probably post a picture or two, but it's better if you go to 4C Camp for Adults and check it out. Much more there than I could post here.

There was a workshop on beginning dulcimer this year and I signed up for it. I've been a guitar player since I was 14, but I've been looking for something new to play. Not much luck with the didgeridoo, since I can't master circular breathing, so the dulcimer is a good choice. It produces a drone sound (it was invented by Scottish immigrants who were familiar with the pipes) and that's what I was looking for.

We did Ok for two hours of workshop and some practice during free time.

We parked the camper on the 4C Camp grounds and I discovered a water leak. Tomorrow I will finally get around to tracking it. It only leaks when the water pump is on, so it's not a priority at this point since camping is probably over for this season/ The redneck roof patch was road worthy. It was still in place when we got home but there is still water getting in on the other end of the coach. Hopefully I fixed that yesterday, but the next rain will tell.

Speaking of which: Rainfall is returning to normal. We're back to mowing and I suspect that by Thursday when new data come out that my part of upstate NY will be off the "abnormally dry" zone. Still plenty of green tomatoes on the vines, but the temp last night fell to 42. Definitely fall in the air.

Today was nice outside working weather tho. Yesterday I primed the wood around the windows and today I glazed what needed glazing. Next shopping trip I'll match the paint color to the trim color and get the painting done before the night-time temps are too low. Then I can call the outside complete. The siding looks good and people can't really tell what's wrong with the window color, but I know, and I know it needs to be done.

On the next shopping trip I will also pick up a new computer. I had the computer guy put something together for me since I don't need any peripherals, just a desktop. I've had the beast I'm using for six years and it was given to me by a buddy who bought a Mac, so the sucker is probably 8 or 9 years old. I had a new drive put into it a long time ago, but that was when the processor wasn't too obsolete. I spend more time waiting for this machine than I spend time doing, but I have never liked the idea of loading a new machine.

Not much else coming to mine. I did try to add a pic and they are all too large for mybloggers.

Happy fall!

When I was a about 9 (a LONG time ago), I had the opportunity to play one of those with the help of a professional. It was at school and we were there for Parent-Teacher's night or something like that and a woman had a dulcimer there. I was looking at it and she came up behind me and helped me to play it. Great memory. Thanks!

A lot of the new machines come pre-loaded.

That was fun listening to!
I'd never heard of a dulcimer before, so I looked it up online and realized that it was the same instrument we had in 7th grade band. Our teacher called it something else though. Anyway, good job!

It's a mountain dulcimer. I'm not aware of any other names for it, but there are other instruments created by the same mountain people that sound and perhaps look similar.

Can't remember the name, but that was a Harry Belafonte song they were playing ... brings back memories. Everyone looked like they really loved doing this.

I'm the guy on the right with the cut of shirt sleeves... Yup, everybody was enjoying themselves. The tune is called Jamaican Farewell. It's available by Harry on youtube, also a 1993 jazzed-up version.

Hey how did the surprise anniversary idea pan out?

It turned out Ok, but by Friday night it was no surprise. I passed the word along on Thursday and some schmutz announced it at dinner that night, then the person who announced it on Friday got the woman's name wrong. But the couple got attention, and I suppose that was the goal!

I hear the hammer dulcimer a lot at various gatherings but never have seen
it played with kitchen instruments. I really am a fan of folk music.
Love the videos.

The hammered dulcimer and the mountain dulcimer are very different animals.

Geez.. if it's not Martin making me hungry at bedtime it's you.

I've always liked dulcimer music. Some of the polka bands around here sometimes have someone who plays it.

It was made famous by Brian Jones and the Stones when Jones played it on "Lady Jane". It's the only truly American instrument, invented by Scottish settlers.

The music sounded fun... where they all dulcimers?

The piano player fell in along the way but the the others were all playing dulcimer. That's an old Harry Belafonte tune for anyone who kind of recognizes it. Jamaican Farewell.

You always sound so upbeat after camp!!

It was a wonderful time away! I think the fact that the firewood is done, and the painting is almost done and the leaks in the coach may be fix also contributes to my mood.
