The Glaucoma Surgeon

Every 10 to 15 years my eye pressure gets out of the control of eye drops and something needs to be done. That time has come again. The pressure has been creeping up for the past three months and today I had a visit with the regional glaucoma specialist in Albany (NY) to make a plan.

The doc doesn't exactly remember *me*, but he remembers my right eye. I was in the process of having an ultrasound of the right eyeball after surgery that went bad in 1985 and the interior blood vessels began to hemorrhage. It was the first time such a hemorrhage was documented with ultrasound and he published an article about the episode that no doubt aided his career.

He doesn't want to take any chances of bleeding again, so this procedure will be done with a laser as was the last two procedures in 1999. I'll be unconscious long enough for the team to stick a needle through the lower lid and into the area behind the right eye. Hopefully the procedure will be over before I regain too much consciousness, although I remember part of the last procedure.

The laser destroys a small portion of the eyeball where fluid is produced, thus lowering the fluid pressure. Aside from the risk of the multiple surgeries I've already had, the biggest risk is that the pressure stays too low. Somehow, I can't really imagine that as an outcome. I've been using five eye drops in that eye for may years.

The insurance claim is settled for the fire and work on the house begins tomorrow. We'll be replacing the garage with a wooden "Amish" garage. These building are really nice. You may have seen them being transported down the road during off hours. The garage is a 24x24 and comes in two halves (like a double-wide) that are assembled on-site. The building is very well constructed and it will actually be superior to what was here, although the siding won't match the house like the old one did.

I'm doing some of the tree cutting myself so the money for that part of the work can cover the big trees that I can't do. Surgery won't be scheduled for a few weeks--they are trying to recover medical records from the earlier surgeries--so hopefully I can't get everything done before then.

Last year was pancreatitis, this year is glaucoma, but aside from medical crap, it's a damn good summer so far!

Stay cool!

jj, All of a sudden a few years ago my vision got really bad and I found out I had a tear in the back of one retina, that had scarred over before I went to the doc. I've had it checked out twice already this year. My prob. is opposite from yours--I need more fluid around the retina but there's no way to pump any in there. Good luck--you'll do fine.

That is the doc's first and only concern that he mentioned, that the pressure could go too low. Last time anything close to that happened the two blood vessels in the back of the eye hemorrhaged and I couldn't see anything until they injected a gas bubble to "inflate" the eye. Fortunately, nature took over and pressure was eventually restored. That is the same eye in which the pressure is now too high again.

Geez, when you get to be Martin's age you can talk!

It will probably be a month or so before the garage is delivered. The one we looked at was a single-car model, but close enough to get the idea of how it's built. I've been having surgery since I was 4-years-old. I'd be concerned about the surgery that's done to aid drainage. The laser is designed to slow the production of fluid, and while it is something to be concerned about, it is the best choice at this time, so there's no need to sweat it now that the decision has been made.

Thanks. This summer is one of the best. Weather is good, plants are doing well, we have baby squash on the vines already, and I got my new man-toy! Yup, really nice!

The only part of the procedure I have a problem with is when they need to insert a needle through the lower lid into the back of the eye socket. I can't handle that, so I need to be unconscious for a few minutes while they do that part.

This has nothing to do with getting old.Good luck to the surgery .Keep us posted.Like you said.Be calm.

Nothing to do with age: I was born with cataracts and the surgery to remove them in 1957 eventually lead to glaucoma when I was 19 years-old.

I am so sorry that you have so much on your plate right now. The Amish
pride themselves on their good workmanship so you should have a fine garage.

Yeah, I hope it's actually built by the Amish and "Amish" isn't just part of the name! Could happen!

We have heat and humidity in the forecast for the weekend, but today was beautiful... dry and 69 degrees. I'm not looking forward to winter, but I suppose that's what it takes for you guys to have summer!

Isn't it fun getting old??????

I have arthritis that came with age, but the glaucoma is unrelated. And as I always say, getting old beats the alternative.

Hope all goes well. You seem calm about it. Eye surgery, even the common cataract removal, can be worrisome. When you get around to it, post pix of your Amish structure.
