Bubba Come Back (And Marg's Slippers)

Even that has been cleaned up and packed away with the rest. I take the time to band each row of branches so that it's easy to put up the next year. I can only imagine how it would be for the poor fool who throws the branches in a box, one by one, and leaves it to somebody else to following year to figure out.

Bubby and the bossman finished up the inside work last week--everything except a few window cam-locks. We'll make a plan on how to get the siding up, although it doesn't seem to be a happening thing until spring. I really wanted the snow guards on the roof to keep the snow from "avalanching" all at once off the metal roof when it warms up. But it has been snowing lightly and the temps will stay below freezing, so I don't know if it will get done or not. Apparently the boys went to Long Island for a long holiday. Guess I'll hear from bossman next week.

Christmas was pleasant, and as you can see, I pack up the decorations on 26 December. My parents always left the stuff until after new years, for the sake of visiting, I think, but New Years is a nothing holiday to us, so when Christmas is over; it's over. Stepdaughter and hub-II brought the kids (all FOUR of them) over on Saturday. They were remarkably well-behaved. Hard to believe that the four-year-old girl is a terrorist at times, but that is Grandma's report when she stays at their place for overnight visits.

As for the mention of Marg: I saw a pair of slippers on one of her older posts (which I can't find now or I'd link to it) that I wanted to have for when I take my boots off in the mudroom. I figured I'd just wear them to the bedroom, then put on sneakers or rigid slippers like I usually wear. Anyway, I sent the post to Donna and she figured out how to knit a pair for me.

Today is the first day I'm wearing them, and I've had them on since we got home this afternoon. My feet were cold here where I sit last night, but for now, they are very warm. Can't say if it's the room temp or the slippers, but I'll find out after a few days. It was 20 degrees out last time I looked and that's usually good for cool floors.

It hasn't been snowing much, even in parts of the country that expect it and need it, but it's been raining plenty here. Downpours yesterday have a sump pump running intermittently today. This isn't a good situation, since with the water table as high as it is, there will be no place for spring runoff--be it from snow melt or storms. But that is beyond my control unless we head for the south.

The days are getting longer in the afternoon, by 5 minutes already, and it will be less than a month before the sun sets at 5 pm here. A few cold weeks after that and the worst is over. All one can do is hope for an early spring like we had two years ago. Last year was much too cold and wet to be pleasant.

Well, have a happy new year, although I prefer to say, make the best of each moment. As I mentioned in a comment to Jeri this morning, the realization hit me when I was putting away the Christmas stuff that one of these Christmases will be my last, and since I don't know which one, they (like everything else) need to count!

I just started reading your posts and am trying to catch up. I looked at your picture and wondered if that was some new modern type of tree that hadn't reached the midwest yet. Unfortunately, I am the poor fool who throws the branches in the storage bag and am also the poor fool who has to match them up the next year. I am going to follow your advice and fasten them together somehow. So, thank you for the great tip.

I use the long twist-ties that used to come on lettuce before lettuce began coming in bags. It really does same a lot of time, effort and frustration!

Lots of comments on your new post. That shows something. I like your style--Christmas tree, slippers, etc. Stay warm.

It's almost 50 right now although the low on Tuesday night is expected to be -0. Not many greasers left, but we are the core of the community. Hard to find that on the Internet these days!

Happy New Year!

I love your acqua slippers. We need to make the most of every day and my family is trying to spend as much time together as possible. Our
weather is enviable. About 6l and no wind for a change.

The days are already getting longer (although colder) and I'm thinking about spending time outside now that Bubba and company are finished inside. I have wood to cut and split and all the trimmings from three trees to cut and store for kindling for next year. A warmer climate would be nice, but as I said somewhere today (actually I think it was on your post), I just don't have the freedom to pick up a few things and head out.

We need to make every day count, John. We are all only a second away from drawing our last. I have always wanted the tree down as soon after Christmas as possible. It looks so bare and forlorn once the packages are gone. Don't know why it looks okay when we put it up but completely different after Christmas; but, to me, it always does.

We usually have a few packages to put under it right away, but that bareness underneath probably does have a lot to do with getting it down quickly. My father used to run model trains around the tree in Queens and I don't ever remember (as a kid) wanting it gone in a hurry.

I have always been into making every day count, and just one car accident away from being a vegetable, but it was kind of an abstract thought, with no real immediacy. When guys your age begin to drop and get seriously ill, it becomes more personal. That thing about middle age... LOL I'm almost 59 and I doubt that I can make it to 118, although with advances in medicine, it has been said (by Dr. Ray Kurswile to name one) that we may live quite long lives if we can hold out for another 15 years.

Happy New Year!

One year in CA we kept our Frazier Fir till the Super Bowl. I usually take mine down after the New Year, probably before the weekend after the 1st. So long as it is still fresh it stays.

I'd have to make a new plan if I ever get a live one. They don't become commercially available until mid-December around here. I had three pines cut down after the garage fire, but it was summer, with no way to save the tops until Christmas.

I took home the 'slipper socks' the hospital gave me--warm and comfortable!
comment by greatmartin on Dec 28, 2011 7:43 PM ()
I brought home two pair of them from two stays a month apart last spring. Donna likes them, but I can't stand anything (slipper or sock) that barely covers the bottom of my ankle.

Happy New Year!

You have the best dressed feet in town.
That naked tree trunk looks so sad. Ours comes down on New Year's Day.

I tried wearing the slippers without socks and they are too loose. Hopefully Herself will have it figured out before my birthday.

is it ok if I wish for a snowstorm here? winter just isn't winter unless you have one good snowstorm. most years all we get is a dusting. I am leaving the tree up until after new years. in the past we have been very lazy and it was still up in february!
comment by elkhound on Dec 28, 2011 6:16 PM ()
Places that want and need snow aren't getting it. When your water supply is melting snow and it doesn't come, you will have a problem next summer. A reporter was standing somewhere west of here the other night and said the snow by now should have been over his head, yet the ground was bare. So go ahead and hope!

Happy New Year!

Awe, what a strange realization, although I guess we all have that. Ya just never know...
I like your slippers!!!!
comment by kristilyn3 on Dec 28, 2011 5:47 PM ()
The realization becomes less abstract and more meaningful when guys you know start to drop and others get cancer and crap like that. I believe that death is final, so that isn't really an issue, but Donna really doesn't want to deal with a house alone and I still have too many things I want to do... I just guess I just spend less time thinking and more time doing.

Happy New Year!
