Back to School

The past week has been killer. I have been trying to get as much accomplished in as little time as possible - probably not a smart idea.

School began for me on September 5th. For my first semester of Architecture School I'm taking the following courses: PHY 101 College Physics, MTH 121 (it's a simple math course all freshman have to take), ARC 101 Architect Design Studio 1 (this is the class I'm most excited about taking), and ARC121 Intro to Architecture (this is in lecture hall). It's a heavy load but I'm pretty sure I can handle it. I HAVE to do well. The university that I'm attending expects its Architecture students to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.70 to remain in the program.

Tuition at my university is $8600 a semester - that includes applied grants and financial assistance. I worked my ass off this summer making sure I'd have enough in my savings to cover it. I wouldn't be able to live on campus, that's for sure - housing is way too expensive. Besides, I have it so good living at home, so I really can't complain at all. I'm sure I will though. It would be fun living on the campus just for the experience of it, but I've got a few friends who are in their Sophomore and Junior years at the college and live in their own apartments. I'm sure I'll be going to my fair share of college parties this year! :)

An interesting thing I learned on campus this week, was that our LGBT Resource Center is having a welcome reception for LGBT and allied (straight/gay supportive) students. It's being held at the Union Fireside Hall - should be fun. I'm definitely going to it. It'll only last from 5:30-7:30, Wednesday, so it won't be a late night. There might be some interesting people to meet!

I am so whipped. My eyes are closing and my belly is empty. I did the grocery shopping in the rain (not fun) - fish sounds good tonight. My Mom is working late, so my Dad and I will be enjoying my delicious food. We both like salmon, so that's what we'll be eating!

Hope you all enjoy the weekend! I'll be sleeping in!!:)

I've written about it but very briefly--I've had too many die in my arms and have heard too many parents say "Who cares?"

That is so sad to hear. At least those kids had a person like you - someone they knew cared about them.

I hope your event is a lot of fun. It's always good to meet more people!

It was a lot of fun. I'll be writing a post about it tonight - really met a great bunch of people.

That is such an interesting field. Study hard but don't neglect the social
side of college.

I enjoy socializing too much - have to learn how to moderate myself a bit. I'm sure I'll figure it all out in time.

best of luck with college! don't party too hard. I look forward to seeing your updates. I am just amazed that you don't seem like a typical young college student. You will go far!

Thanks!
I'm not a typical anything...
I will try to post at least once a week if I can.

That is great. I am sure you will do wonderfully! URI, where I am an adjunct instructor at the library school, started up this week too, which means I had my first class tonight, and my other class kicks off tomorrow morning. It is always pretty exciting.

URI has a whole LGBTQ Center, too. It has come quite far since my years there as a student in the 1990's when we had a a club, but no more than an office in the student union.

Oh, so you teach also. At first I wasn't sure what you meant by adjunct so I looked it up..dah. Good luck with your classes!

It's amazing to me how many colleges now have LGBTQ centers on their campuses - its awesome to see! They do a lot of good in the community too.

My husband never acted like he enjoyed his career as a computer programmer in aerospace, so one time I asked him what he would rather have done if he could start over. First, he said 'work at a dog track.' But a couple of days later he said he might have enjoyed being an architect.

'work at a dog track' -

It's too bad your husband didn't end up with Architecture as his career, but being a computer programmer for Aerospace had to be pretty amazing I would have thought.

I should have added to my aging list #22--school is NOT a necessity to aging!

We have had a Pride Center here for more than a decade--they have youth groups and do great--I have helped with being a 'buddy' to teenagers with AIDS and/or HIV--very gratifying but heartbreaking also--I know many LGBT college groups do a lot of work with youngsters and that is great!

I read your list - it was a good one!

That's great you mentored teenagers with HIV/AIDS - can't imagine what that must have been like! Have you ever written about it in any of your posts?
