Texas History and Crab Cakes

We had a lovely day. We went to Bobby's and watched Billie
Bob Thornton's version of The Alamo. We have watched at
least 5 or 6 versions and relish all of them because it makes
us feel close to those of our family who were part of Texas
History.

We came home and had crab cakes for dinner and it made me
think of the time we went to Galveston with friends and
ended up going crabbing. We had wire baskets and chicken
necks and caught a big picnic icebox full in no time. We
had rented a condo and the crabs swam around until we got
to our friends home the next day. She had an enormous
fish kettle . Our hostess was merciless about dropping those
poor crabs in boiling water. It is a gulf coast thing but I
didn't enjoy the cooking. I did enjoy the huge lumps of crab
meat drenched in dill butter. We dined royally and then my
hostess and I prepared the rest for the freezer.

She was a real sea food lover. She packed the trunk of her
new buick with ice and shrimp because she didn't have a
container and couldn't miss out on the fresh shrimp. That
car smelled forever.

Yeah, shrimp does that. Glad you had such a nice time! I just love watching things that I know my family had part in as well.

The smell will kill you and it permeated the interior of her car too.

The Elks Club used to have big crab crack events when I was a kid. My folks loved going, and then my mother developed an allergy to the crab. Probably broke her heart.

I bet it did break her heart. It is my pick of all seafood.

Me and my buddy used to crab at Seaford Long Island 40 years ago. It was in the drinking days (hangover at 3a.m.) so it could have been better. One winter we went to the Fulton fish market and bought a bushel between us. Cooked half before work and the other half after. I've been crabbed-out ever since.

Since leaving Florida, good seafood is what I miss most.

Sometimes we can locate a grocery store that has good fresh stuff, but not
often.

Miss all versions of film fights whenever I can. I cannot bear the thought of plunging any creature into boiling water, although, like you, I will eat them. At the dining room of the Overseas Press Club in New York, a fantastic townhouse on 41st St., they had live lobster in a tank and diner was to choose and voila! you had dinner. I usually ordered anything else.

My son and his friend, Mike decided they would cook lobsters. It was their
last attempt, the lobsters kept jumping out of the pot. It is certainly not
humane, but delicious.

Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie were wonderful in this movie. I sort of have
a tad of hero worship for Jim Bowie and Doc Holiday. Dangerous men have
always appealed to me.
