A Spicy Life

First, let me warn you, this is about the efficacy of
spices that we all have in our cupboards that promote
good health.

We all love freshly ground black pepper. It is a big
bonus to know that the peppercorns we buy and grind for
ourselves are good for us as well as enhancing food.
Piperine fights cancer. It is an antiinflammatory that
also fights osteoarthritis. Sniffing black pepper oil
helps with balance in the aged.

The journal of International Medical research did a study
on oregano. The group taking oregano with every meal
had greater decreasesLDL, lower levels of C reactive protein and greater increases in arterial blood flow.
It only takes one teaspoon daily to experience the benefits.

Basil is used to regulate blood sugar in India. It
fights diabetes and is most effective dried. I am sure
we all use it in Italian dishes. I grow it in my tiny
garden and it thrives.

Sage is a calming herb. It helps with anxiety, Sage oil
helps with mental focusing and memory. It may have other
uses. My great grandmother never had gray hair. It stayed black as a crows wing all her life and she attributed it to rinsing her hair in sage tea. It is
relatively easy to grow but hard to incorporate into your
diet so a supplement is usually necessary. I use it
in stuffing, squash, sweet potatoes and apples. It is
also easy to grow and dry.

I am just throwing this information out there for those
who believe as I do that drugs should be limited to
those that are absolutely necessary. It comes from a
publication called The bottom Line, Personal. I find it
a useful little magazine.

I love all the natural remedies myself. I was reading how nothing natural can be FDA approved since it has to be manufactured to enter the approval process. We live in a crazy world. I also remember going on a cruise excursion with Ron somewhere near a rainforest and our guide mentioned how anything bad for people in the rainforest has a natural curer in the forest. It made sense! We could learn a lot from our early ancestors!!!!

Turmeric is in mustard. Also, I make a Tostado Deluxe topping that has refried beans, ground beef, cumin, coriander, and turmeric among other seasonings, so you could try adding it to chili.

Except for three dill plants, the herbs are all in pots indoors. We have a local college that does agriculture and everything gets sold when the stude3nts leave in April. Last year they had a pot of 5 herbs for $10, not bad.

I love dill and have a recipe for dilly bread that my family loves. I
put a little in potato salad too. I grow basil and mint in the ground
and I lost my rosemary to the cold.

We eat a lot of fresh herbs and spices in the summer and I don't feel any healthier then than I do in the winter...

I like little pots of herbs because I don't have the space to garden as
you do. The herbs and fresh tomatoes are such a summer delight.

Pepper and oregano (and lemon) are the go-to spices for all Greek cooking. I use a lot in everything I do. Jay once said, choking, "put pepper on the list -- I'm sure we've run out." I don't see myself growing spices but I'll try to use more basil. Although I have daily back pain lately, I'm not taking anything for it. Aleve messes up my stomach and doesn't help that much.

I love rosemary chicken and Italian dishes. I have a lot more energy
in the summer. The winter turns me into a couch potato.

Don't forget Turmeric. It is anti-inflammatory.

Tumeric is also good for digestion. The best part is tumeric really does not change the taste significantly so you can use it in just about anything.

Perhaps it would be good for Teal's back. I think we used to use it
in bread and butter pickles. Tell us some more uses for it.
