Musings on Gratitude

Years ago, I kept a gratitude journal and everynight before
I went to bed, I wrote down the things that I was grateful
for on that day. It helped me live through some very hard
times.

Today, my life is easy and if you asked me what I am most
grateful for it would be a loving husband, family and friends.

I guess that I am a pantheist because my spiritual side has
always been fed by nature and it's many wonders. I can
look out across the yard and revel in the glory of yet
another spring.

I am grateful for having the liesure to enjoy my life and
no time constraints. There is no more rushing around trying in vain to be superwoman.

When life is very hard, gratitude for the good things helps
you get to a better place mentally. My daughter is an
example of getting lemons and making lemonaide. She is
grateful that she will always have her autistic son at home
and won't have to go through the empty nest syndrome. That
is an extreme example but I am so glad for her courage
and optimism. She is my hero.

What a great idea. I might have to start doing that! Your daughter sounds amazing. Sounds like you did good!

I journal. I started last year and actually kept up with it, with the exception of a few blank months when things got really busy. It's good to go back and read and learn things about yourself and your development.

It is. The things that seem common place to us today and a part of
every day life will be amazing to our great grandchildren. I was talking
to a friend last night and we were laughing about some of the things we
had to do during World War II. We feel that the hardships made us stronger
and more adaptable.

I am shredding mine because it was by me, for my eyes only.

This is a very uplifting thing to read this morning, and a wonderful reminder that a positive perspective can and does refresh the soul and the psyche. Cultivating gratitude is essential to embracing joy and appreciating those precious little things.

It can be as little as the joy of real cream in your coffee.

I am wondering if I should destroy my journals? I still keep one but my entries are infrequent.

Do you care if someone else reads them? I do and will shred mine.

I think a lot of us hesitate to start a journal because we think we should have started it years ago, or we're afraid we won't keep it up, but like you've said, recording our thoughts can get us through a time in our life and no shame about moving on when it has served its purpose.

True. It is especially helpful when you are angry. If you sit down and
write out your feelings in longhand, you are usually free of the anger when
you finish.

That is a wonderful idea about keeping this log.
I used to keep a journal and then got tired of it after awhile.
This was done by long hand.I have boxes down in the cellar and not sure if the kids will be interested in this.It could be boring to them.

What we think of as boring could be so interesting to our children. I wish
that my grandparents had kept journals. My great grandfather did write to
my great grandmother when he homesteaded in Oklahoma and the letters were saved and passed on to us. It was great. We even used them in Oklahoma
History classes.
and passed on to us.

I kept a handwritten journal for years. The pages are in the garage. I am seriously considering shredding everything since I don't like the idea of their being read by anyone else. I switched to computer documents some years ago. I stopped making entries, except on rare occasion when I want to vent about something no one else should read, when I started blogging. I have a feeling I will start shredding soon.
