Moll Flanders and Swamplandyia

I am totally out of library books and dipped into Moll
Flanders last night. It is still a totally wonderful
story from foundling to whore to gentlewoman. I have a
copy of the first edition which is as Daniel Dafoe wrote
it without a lot of editing.

Swamplandyia is the most original and gripping pieces of
fiction that I have read in a while. It is set in Cape
Coral and deep in the swamps. It concerns a family
devastated by the death of their mother, who was the star
of a show that featured swimming with alligators and also
wrestling with them. She was their star attraction and
the show went broke despite all their efforts to attract
customers. It doesn't sound good does it? I couldn't
put it down. It got raves from a lot of noted authors.
It explores the bond between siblings and their efforts
to survive emotionally and financially. It is so original.

I have already turned in the book and don't remember the
last name of the author but her first name was Karen and
the title is unusual enough that there won't be one
like it. Get it by all means,

A good story is a good story, no matter when it is written.
I thoroughly enjoyed the stilted English in Moll Flanders.
Swamplandyia was a first novel but the author had penned
some great short stories which I will endeavor to find
today.

I'll have to look for it at the library. I am currently reading a really good book about a singer who is falsely accused of having an affair with a priest who has just been nominated to be a cardinal. In spite of the fact that the two had a close friendship, the church and the priest totally abandons this woman as she ends up losing everything while the priest gets off scot free.

It sounds like a good book. The woman usually pays.

You would really like this book. It has a little bit of creepiness
because one of the sisters fancies herself a spiritualist.

The author is Karen Russell. I read Swamplandyia's great review in the NY Times, and it sounds like a fun read. Glad you liked it. Looking forward to getting the Kindle edition.

A novel about a family in Florida. This sounds interesting. Glad Ted is feeling a bit better.

Sometimes the language in those long-ago classics is hard to read, and other times it's a wonderful discovery.

This is about the third time I had read Moll Flanders and it is always
a delight. The language was fun.

Reading is my hedge against boredom and I hate, hate, Ted's taste in
television.

Somewhere my comment to you got lost. You can have my copy of Moll
Flanders. It is a ragged paperback so don't worry about returning it.
