The Glass Studio

There was a wealth of beautiful objects to look at, they
were too pricey for any of us to buy at this time of
year.

After being treated to a much too long demonstration of the
actual glass blowing, I came away with an understanding of
the process and the knowledge that it was too hot and too
labor intensive for most people. It was 75 degrees here
yesterday and the two furnaces made it almost unbearable.
The artist liked to talk and offered to let us watch as
long as we wanted. We watched him create three objects
and all of them were gorgeous.

We cooled off and went for Italian food. Mine was gooey
pasta that I was tempted to send back but it was made
a little better by the fantastic onion soup and the cream
brulee. Hazel, who seldom buys groceries, took the pasta
home with her to top off with fried eggs. Big Yuk!

The studio was also the artist's home and it was lovely.
I think it was a converted office building and the design
was ingenious. It was as much fun to see it as it was
to watch the glass blowing. It was decorated with glass
platters and sinks.

My New York loft neighbor is an expert glass artist and had a workshop in New York at one time. Now he makes his living running art shows throughout the country. Lila, his fashion executive wife just stayed with us. She's down here working with Chico's this week. It was a delight to see her.

It is a joy to have a guest. I loved the beautiful objects but it would
be so hard to learn the skills to actually blow the glass.

I remember seeing a documentary about an artist making glass sculptures, and he didn't have the glass blowing skills so worked alongside the artisan wielding his own hammer and tongs to shape the glass into what he was artistically envisioning. I pictured cooking that way - telling someone how to do it without being able to actually stir the ingredients and sense how they were progressing through the cooking process.

You wouldn't be happy if you couldn't actually stir the pot! It would
take a long time to master your cooking skills. I love doing pottery
because it is a lot like cooking but have no aspirations to be a glass artist.

Many years ago I saw a bit of glassblowing at a fair. Would love to see some more, it was beautiful. I do love art glass.

I was blown away by the artist's bathroom. He had a gorgeous glass sink
and a lot of decorative glass on the walls. He also had pendent lights and shades that he had made.

The person who did the presentation in college gave each of us a glass medallion about 1.5 inches in diameter and 3/8 inch thick. It isn't quite heavy enough to be a paper weight, but it is decorative. Kind of like stained glass in a disc. Sounds like you had a good time anyway despite the high prices, excessive heat and gooey pasta.

It would be so nice to have a medallion to remember the experience. I
have reclaimed some stained glass and have some that I need to have
repaired.

l've never seen this done, but lived very close to Corning growing up so I probably should have. Oh well! Glad you enjoyed.

It is a long and laborious process but interesting to watch. There are
no shortcuts and I love the quick fix.

I always think of you Jon whenever I see an artist at work.
