Flash Mobs

Wanton destruction and setting fires and looting are just
so wrong. I hope they throw the book at the juveniles
involved in the Philadelphia and Chicago lootings and fires.
These kids must be terribly unsupervised at home. Some of
the kids are as young as ll. It seems to me that parents
have a duty to check on the internet and smart phones that
their children use. I would think that their parents should
recieve a hefty fine that would pay for the damage their
children have done to the properties involved.

Children of the digital age seem to have their brains wired
differently. Seeing the situation in London gave then ideas
and they linked by way of technology to form their own
flash mobs. It is a case of monkey see, monkey do.

Is it the have nots getting back at society?
I have no solution except a rigoursly enforced
curfew. Parents should know where their children are when
they are in Jr. High and highschool.

Some of this "mob flashing" has spilled over to politics. One disgruntled person can influence others, causing disruption at rallies and town hall meetings. Civility has seen better days.

Somewhere along the way, we have lost good manners.

An NBC reporter on Nightly News did report that all the businesses on one street were looted with the exception of one; the bookstore. The report did not, however, mention the racial aspects of the situation.

My sentiments exactly.

I suppose, sadly, it was only a matter of time before flash mobs, which began as pure fun — crowds breaking into dancing in train stations, water balloon and pillow fights in parks, mass choral singing in malls, etc. — would be corrupted to the dark side by acting-out, unsupervised and unruly youngsters, teens and young adults running wild. That alone reflects so many darker, destructive issues issues in society and parenting in particular.

This really grieves me that parents have lost control of their children
in middle school.

I hadn't seen this in the news... not good.

It is horrible because the mob mentality feeds on ever greater attacks of
violence.

I've heard and read only a little about these flash mobs. The most interesting thing is that the Mayor of Philadelphia- who himself is black- acknowledges that that these mobs are black and that many of them appear to be racially motivated- i.e.,these mobs ignore black people standing right beside their white or Hispanic victims. In the interest of political correctness, the news fails to report the races of the attackers or their victims. Yes, I think the have-nots are rearing their ugly heads, and as long as the press keeps race out of the picture, there is no need to address racial disparity. The conduct of these teenagers is completely unacceptable- as is the failure of the media to identify a critical element of the problem.

I watch msnbc and they wouldn't dare report on the racial aspects of the
problem. I think I will switch to PBS, thanks for reminding us, Marta.

Just so you know, Dottie, the PBS NewsHour has done several long reporting segments on this and has noted these racial aspects, both in the British and American incidents. NPR has also done an excellent job.
