Exploiting Medicare

Medicare is a valuable service and I appreciate it no end.
The very people who need it most are often the ones who
take any and all of the medicare benefits. I am talking about the services of Home Health Care and the scooter stores.

At least twice a week, I get calls from Home Health Care Services offering me benefits that vary from light house
work to the services of a nurse twice a week and someone
to assist me with bathing. I just told one of their reps
who after I told him that I was happy and healthy and didn't
need their services wanted to come by and discuss what they
could do for me. This is overkill. Of course I told him
not to come.

There are people who need their services and people who just use them because they are free for the taking. I have repeatedly seen folks with one foot in the grave acquire a
scooter and then have trouble operating it. There is a man
in my neighborhood who uses it for transportation to the
shopping center. This is near suicidal because of the
heavy traffic. These things are not meant to be street
legal...surely?

If one takes services just because they are free it goes
without saying that they are depleting medicare funds. They
are invaluable benefits for people who need them but I
certainly don't think they should be used capriciously.

This issue really upsets me (thanks for the post). The "authorities" need to crack down on medicare abuse/privileges. It's a disgrace to our society. Think of the money that could be saved.

"At little or no cost to you". Well, at least they don't say free as Child Health Plus does in New York. I think I heard the worst on the news the other night: Clients of CDCHP have to receive generic drugs (although they can apply for an exception). This rule doesn't apply to Medicaid tho! Huh? People paying for their plans have to use generics but Medicaid patients who pay nothing still get brand names? As usual with the news, they explain little. I doubt that the explanation for this would be very satisfying, but I'd like to hear it anyway.

It does really make a person wonder. I am infuriated when the scooter ads
come on and say they are at little or no cost to you. I just imagine some old person sitting back and saying, "I might as well have one if they are
free.

Yes,this is greed on their part.Americans are very greedy.Left face it they are. This is so ridiculous of them calling you.Just because that we are elderly and they want to prey on us.So far no one has here. But if they do it will be trouble and report them fast. They are idiots.Medicare is so abused by many.

Yes people abuse medicare. There is a whole medicaid culture here. They tell each other how to get on it and what lawyers to use. It makes me sick.

An elderly friend of mine was put on home oxygen via Medicare, and the vendor filled her living room with excess cylinders that she didn't need so they could get the most out of the government. There's no common sense or pride anymore, just greed and selfishness.

This is the kind of thing that needs to be reported. It is wonderful to have if you really need it.

I had no idea all that was available... That's good to know it's there for people in need!

I think we should all use services responsibly. If I get another call, I am going to report them. If someone needs the help they should certainly have it.

I agree with you on that whole-heartedly! Some states (like Indiana) are more involved in their medicare programs to avoid this kind of abuses and leave more funds available for needed care.

That really is the whole point...leaving the funds available for those who
really need it.
