Debatable

We watched a tv show last night about children who have a
disorder in which they are blind, can't walk and do not age
normally. In many of the cases, the mothers were warned of
this disorder before birth. One of the children was the size
of a l0 year old and was 42.

It seems so selfish to bring a child into the world who has
nothing but a life of misery to look forward to. I know most
people disagree thinking that life is sacred. I believe that
a life without pleasure and cognition is not life.

We have a pending law in the state legislature that says life
begins at conception. There is no provision for saving the
life of a mother or for pregnancy resulting from rape. Where
do these kooks come from?

I see the result of this mind set every day. A severely
handicapped child will ultimately end up warehoused in an
institution when his or her parents are dead. What an outcome!!

Life begins at conception is about as strongly antiabortion as it gets. Why do some feel compelled to regulate and control others to such an extreme?

I don't know Dottie. I don't understand control freaks.

They can pass all these crazy kooky laws they want, but not a one of them is going to stand up in court. Roe vs. Wade is the federal mandate and federal law will always take precedence over these stupid state laws the Republicans keep trying to pass. Abortion is legal, whether they want to admit it or not.

That makes two of us.

Oklahoma and Texas have become so conservative and it is the men that entangle themselves in a woman's right to be healthy that makes me the maddest.

Totally agree. You forgot the "moralists" are also including incest as another condition for which abortion would not be allowed. See my response to kristilyn. Ed gets questionnaires from the Republican National Committee. Recently they asked him if he believed life begins at conception. He said, no, he believes life begins at erection. I wonder if they'll get it.

Yes, I did forget about incest and of course that is another compelling reason for abortion.

Interesting take on this. I am wishy washy on this topic of quality of life, I mean if they don't know any different are they really suffering from a lack of quality? I mean if they are in constant pain then yeah, but otherwise? I don't know.
Life doesn't begin at conception. That I have a firm stance on.

They do suffer. The parents suffer just as much. I have worked with these
children and some stupid laws have been passed which makes life even more
difficult. For instance, parents now have to worry that the girls will get
pregnant because it interferes with the child's right to procreate if they
get a hysterectomy. Ugh!!

Sometimes defective children have just enough awareness to know they are not normal. They can be lonely, wonder why they are not included in things, not know what to expect nor how to handle needs or wants. That is an emotional pain that I believe most of them suffer. The Santorums had their genetically defective baby when Karen was 51. Older male sperm also contributes to genetic defects. Their baby is in the hospital now. Her illness is fatal. She's one of the lucky ones. There is nothing iffy about it. If Christians believe the soul is immortal, why not allow it to find a viable body? They are making the wrong moral choice based only on themselves and not on the baby. Self aggrandized faith doesn't even begin to cover it.

It turns my stomach!

I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity. Society needs major changes in this area... Unfortunately, as with the law you cite, the "changes" are being made in the wrong direction. I still remember a blog by Beabea years ago when she talked about people congratulating a 16-year old inner city high school student on her regeneracy. How screwed up is that? But that's how too many people (women in particular) think about reproduction.

I was thinking men are more guilty of skewed thinking about reproduction. It
has to do with the macho "how many children can I father" thing. But you are
so right quality of life is important and in my view it is so selfish to
doom someone to sickness, early death and all of the other things that Teal
mentioned.

I'm with you. Very sad and upsetting to see this.
