Cricket Invasion and Great News

Last winter was so mild that the soil didn't freeze deeply
enough to kill the crickets. They are now swarming in various
places and downtown Oklahoma City is host to these invaders.
They are attracted to light and in the mornings have to be
swept away from doorways before a merchant can enter. They
haven't gotten to our house but we live in a suburb that is
not bright with lights at night.

It is very strange to see a carpet of crickets on city streets. They eat cloth so it would be a disaster to get
them in a clothing store. Evidently they are harmless in
other ways, just a nuisance.

Bobby's pet scan came out cancer free. He will be tested
every 3 months and we can't really breathe until the five
years have elapsed. One more chemo and he is done, then
surgery after 8 weeks. His oncologist says if it comes
back it will probably be in the lungs or the liver. Not
a pleasant prospect but the pressure is off for now.

I delivered his lunch yesterday and he is in good spirits.
He wanted to talk about my father's prostate cancer. It
was terminal by the time it was diagnosed. He realizes
that his chances are so much better than my father's were.

Comments:

Younger grandson has a pet gecko which eats crickets so we hear the chirping all year long. We have to feed the crickets special food to keep them alive until they are eaten. Talk about the circle of life...

That gecko would be in heaven in Oklahoma City.

Crickets are supposed to be good luck. If that is the case, we should have
a lucky year.

All your love and home cooking made a huge difference in his recovery.

I hope so. He has been unbelievably brave through this ordeal. The chemo
has made horrible and unimaginable side effects like his teeth falling out
and a lot of neuropathy, in his hands and feet.

What wonderful news about Bobby. You must have a great load lifted.

We get crickets in the house now and then. One can never find them. They shut up when you walk near. It is supposed to be bad luck to kill a cricket. I mostly let them be. My solution would be to trap it and carry it outside. I do this with geckos and the other day, the pool guy scooped up a baby frog from the pool because it would have drowned. He put it in the grass outside the cage. The creatures I kill are roaches and Palmetto bugs and ants. No love lost there.

Yes, a lot of the stress I was feeling is gone. We have bees nearby and I
hate to encounter them when I am outside. It is too dry around here for
roaches or Palmetto bugs but we spray the perimeter of the house for ants.
I battle mice daily.

Such good news about Bobby. Now, to get past the last few treatments. Cricket invasions? How awful! Have they ravaged near-by fields?

The heat has already ruined the crops. People are having to sell their
animals because of the compromised hay crop. I water every other day and
am surprised that water hasn't been rationed.
