Christmas Cookery

I just made a batch of nofail fudge and another batch of
date balls to feed hungry grandchildren. Shephard and I
are watching Mandy so I will take him a plate. Previously,
I had made toffee, white chocolate peppermint and white
chocolate covered pretzels.

Ellie and the kids called from Epcott Center this morning.
They were delayed and it took them 13 hours to get to
Orlando last night. They are having a super time and
Ellie said the time share was lovely. The girls have on
shorts which is pronounced contrast to the weather here.

I am expecting Linda's children plus Ellie and the girls
here for Christmas eve. Linda broke her leg...don't
mention it on facebook her kids don't know yet...and she
is having surgery the middle of this week.

Have a wonderful holiday, my best wishes for all of you,
including your dogs and cats.

A special thanks to Laura for the recipe for skillet
cookies. It has always been a favorite of mine but I
lost it somewhere along the way.

Of course I made them. It isn't Christmas without the shortbread cookies.

My favorite holiday dessert is mince pie. You can still find it sometimes. Anyway, I rarely eat regular dessert any more. Just now and then a frozen yogurt bar, or a Weight Watchers Triple chocolate thingie.

I have a container of mince meat - with real meat - in my refrigerator. It is probably 20 years old and It has meat, currants, finely diced apples, golden raisins, citron, and of course cooked meat that was ground up. I keep adding liquor to it and take some out once in awhile. It needs more ground suet added, per my grandmother's recipe, but sometimes it's hard to find suet, so it's getting leaner with each addition. When I use it for something, it's usually a small pie, enough for the two of us. Sometimes I make a pie that is a layer of pumpkin pie topped with mincemeat. It mellows the flavor of the meat part, and perks up the blandness of the pumpkin part.

"Skillet Cookies" is what they called it in the Denver Post, but doesn't sound attractive, does it? I'm changing it to "Krispie Date Balls" in my database.

Krispie date balls sounds fine. They are very good and so easy.

I'm not allowed toffee any more but I've been craving fudge for weeks. I might have to give in and make some.

did you make that wonderful shortbread this year? I want to make pralines some time or other but I can't stay out of them.

I am looking forward to it but my goodness the toddlers and what they get into is daunting.

It's fun to make things others will eat up. My last experiment with a white cake was disappointing so I think I will go for chocolate basic stuff instead to take to family.

Jeremy's wife brought what she called Dirt Dessert to my house. It was
a layer of oreos, a layer of chocolate pudding, a layer of nuts and a
layer of whipped cream or kool whip. It was very good.
