The Holidays

They are almost over except for New Years eve and New
Years day which we largely ignore.

I decorated the mantle but did not have the heart to put
up the tree. I was grateful for the parties and had a
good time. We have good neighbors that are a joy to celebrate with and with whom we are compatible. I will
try to entertain them soon.

It was a joy to be with my adult grandchildren and two
great grandchildren on Christmas Eve. Chandler is talking
a blue streak and I was surprised when she called me grandma because I hadn't seen her for six months and she
wasn't talking then. Ted was so captivated by her and
so was I because she smothered us with hugs and kisses.

Ted and I have been watching movies in our down time and I am so pleased to have the house put to rights and to
discontinue all that cooking for awhile.

The dogs are almost as spoiled as Jon Adam's cats. Jose
is a delight and Rex has such a sweet nature. He didn't
seem to mind that a friend gave Jose three new out fits
and Chandler stole his dog toy!

I haven't had a tree since I left the family home in Chicago in 1955. Jay wsn't religious, although we did send cards. Our lifestyle (we lived in an electronics lab) didn't lend itself to owning a tree, or animals for that matter. Jay said they'd get electrocuted. Who could argue? And Ed is Jewish. And I'm not religious. BUt I did like the tree part and all the rest of it. I liked that the season made the best people want to be good to each other.

I love the spirit of Christmas, it has been hard this year to celebrate
and the spirit has eluded me but next year I am going to put up the tree.
Every ornament has a story and evokes memories.

One of my neighbors in the canyon sets up an elaborate tree at her cabin, and she's only there a couple of days a month, so she doesn't take it down and undecorate the house until summer or so in order to get enough time with it. Every year I wonder if she's going to decide that's a Christmas house and leave it up year-round. But then she'd have to dust it.

My sis loved holiday decor so much, she had Christmas lights along the ceilings and left those up all year. When I biked by my b.i.l.'s house a day ago, I noticed he hadn't decorated at all. I felt so sorry for him. Christmas lights were my sister's favorite thing of all time, and I guess he didn't have the heart to do anything without her being here. As time goes by, I forgive him for being a right-winger and throwing me out of his hosue, but I don't have enough of it to re-establish contact because I never know when he'll go off the rails again.

I will put up my tree next year. It is a lot of work as is the dismantling.

It's always a relief when the holidays are over, no matter how much we enjoy them. All the kids made out like bandits, even Briney jr. who got his first book (Curious George Rides a Bike) among other loot.
