Book Review

If you want a riveting read try LUCY by Laurence Gonzales.
It is about a half human, half pygmy chimpanzee who has wonderful human characteristics as well as the instincts
that the animals have. She is a beautiful girl who has been adopted by a scientist who was working in the Congo
where Lucy's father was killed and she and the girl were forced to flee to the United States.
I can't tell you anymore without ruining the story. I read
it in one session this afternoon. Your library probably has
it. It is kind of rare to get a good book these days.

My Harpers Bazaar came to day with an interesting story
about Wallis Warfield Simpson who made such a splash in the
thirties when a King abdicated his throne for her. She was
a very plain woman with a great taste in clothes and it is
said that she had a knowledge of exotic oriental sexual
arts. She often ate only one boiled egg a day to keep
herself thin.

I can remember it being discussed when I was a child. It
was such a scandel.

Have you read that novel about the family that adopted a chimpanzee? I can't remember the name of it and Mr. Tbend is still asleep so I can't ask him. It's fiction, but reads like non-fiction, and you have to keep reminding yourself it didn't really happen.

I always thought they were a rather sad couple.....the couple with no country. I'm with kj; I'll have taters and gravy.

They seemed so shallow to me. I hadn't heard that they hired themselves
out for social events. That must have been very humiliating to the Duke.

What I heard.as the Duke and Duchess faded into their older years, was that they were paid for attending social events where the hosts wanted to have important guests, and they needed the money. Rather a seedy finale to what was billed as noble sacrifice for love.

It was probably very demeaning. I hope they enjoyed it while they had it.
Don't you just know that he had a lot of regrets after the fire of passion was gone.

It isn't a real long book but you might wait until you have the children
in bed, It is hard to put down.

Lucy sounds like a fascinating character, I would love to find a copy. I have read a lot about Mrs. Simpson and watched a few documentaries on her and the Duke of Windsor.
I think that Britain had a lucky escape – the Duke and Duchess were a little too, friendly with Herr Hitler.
If he had, remained ‘King’, we (in Britain) could quite possibly be speaking German, by now!
I am pleased that he did, abdicate – it gave Britain a Great King and (God rest her soul) a Great Queen.

That is very true. Did you see Teal's comment? I'll bet they got bored
with each other pretty fast.

And the Queen Mum never forgave her. For the Kings abdication placed her husband on the throne.

I guess you could use a more vulgar term from today...he was p*ssy whipped. A boiled egg. One. Urk. I'd rather eat my potatoes and remain pleasurably plump.

I don't know how you could really live a very active life on one boiled
egg. Your term fits him just fine.
