Water

A corner of the basement had a small flood, and I spent a long time mopping it up yesterday. It is still raining, but the water is no longer leaking in. I’m pretty sure it was from a bunch of ice that was frozen over that side of the house — it looked like a waterfall, encasing the garden hose and wall behind it, and I had to kick and break loose the trash cans, which were frozen into it. The sudden warm temperature melted all that ice at once, and it got into the basement.

What I am thankful for is that I actually had a big string mop to use. Not something I ordinarily buy, but I was getting ready to do major cleaning of the basement, and the floor needs a serious washing. So I had this big mop with a twister thing that wrings it out.

My life is exciting.

We don't have basements in Florida. They tend to flood during hurricanes. We have a crawl space in the attic. It had no flooring, so we had a handyman floor half of it and use that for storage and I am the designated crawl space person because I can maneuver between the support beams, what with being small and flexible. Oh, joy. Florida houses have no basements because of the tendency to floods. When we have an AC problem, we can get leaks in the garage. It's always sumpin'.

Yep, water is a big thing to deal with. Still, I'd rather have too much water and rain than a drought. I do not envy the western states.

Winter is hard because it keeps me inside a great deal of the time. I am longing to set out some pansies. The only consolation is that spring is right around the cornor. We don't have basements in Oklahoma in most houses.

No basements? I was about to ask, "What about Dorothy?" -- but I forgot, she lived in Kansas, not Oklahoma. But I thought you got cyclones and things like that. I'm a little glad you haven't been outside that much, because the weather changes I think are what has made so many people sick. Please stay warm.

We get so much water in the basement here on occasion that it's basically unusable. Why the put anything more than a crawl-space under here I'll never know. Sounds like yours is finished tho so protecting the floor is important. All I have is a concrete slab. We had enough of a melt down that one sump pump runs occasionally, but no big deal. Fortunately the rain stopped in time.

Many basements are just areas you have to dehumidify and worry about floods. Someone brainy probably has a house design that turns the basement into an area that is meant to deal with water collection.

Winter's tough, seems there's always something to deal with. The twister thing to wring out a mop would be very important to me.

Spring is normally my problem when it comes to water and the house, so it's a little early. The mop is made by Libman, that company that makes scrub brushes with strong handles -- I have one for dishes which is vital because I'm always burning stuff in pans and having to scrub hard.
