Could You Downsize to a Tiny House?

I watched an episode of Tiny House Nation on appleTV last night and was in awe of how little space an adult would have to shrink his belongings down to, in order to move into one of these miniature, about 100- to 200-square-foot things.

The married couple in this episode had a small child, too. I think they will be selling this house after a few years. The husband has almost no room to get dressed in the morning, without hitting something with his arms as he puts on a shirt.

The designers, in order to prepare them for the move, showed them about four medium plastic bins. They said, That's about how much room you have for your stuff.

And they had to get rid of enough to fit into those.

I went to an upstairs closet, which is overflowing onto hooks on the doors, and found enough vintage clothes to start an Etsy store. It began to dawn on me that I too could downsize to fit into a more reasonable space. My dream is to live in a cabin sort of thing someday, with no office furniture, no massive paper collection.

I have often thought that if I had to move, just me, with only a modest income, I could live in a one-bedroom, but my piano would have to come too and that would take up the whole living room. It's 6 ft. 7 in. grand. I could keep the lid down and put a mattress on top. Yup, that would work.

Sometimes I fantasize about starting from scratch in a much smaller place - order all new dishes and furniture from a catalog because I could never decide what of my old stuff to take with me. The tiny house would have to have a laundry room so I could wash my one extra set of clothes.

You should have seen how the wife in the Tiny House show was doing laundry -- manually, in a little plastic container with a handle you had to crank. I vote for a laundry room too.

Had a three bedroom house before moving into this unit of 1 bedroom with ensuite , lounge and dining open space , kitchen on one side , the aircon does the lot . drawback is small walk in wardrobe.

Yeah, I keep thinking about how much easier it is to cool down or heat a smaller space. Better for energy saving.

In my early 60s I decided to get rid of everything I didn't NEED--amazing how little a person needs--6 can openers? Really? Collections of books? Playbills? Cds? All they do is take up space. I have so much room now I can roller skate around the place!
PS I made a lot of money selling all those 'things' on ebay!

Well, roller skating is very important. Thank goodness you cleared the space!

I love big houses but I have often thought about fitting into a smaller
one. I have more of everything than I need but with two big walk in pantries
and 7 crammed to overflowing closets, I am too spoiled to seriously contemplate it. Besides, I think larger spaces are easier to keep clean and presentable. Someday I might have to do it, I hope not.

Why move if your house pleases you? There's a poem, can't remember who wrote it, with the line, "Why should we ever wander, when here is all the world?"
