The Baby

Today in the mail I got a letter from an insurance saleswoman wanting to celebrate with me, or something like that, when the new member of my family arrived. And she reminded me that this meant I'd need to revisit my insurance coverage.

Hmm. I am over 50 and have no children.

Three days ago, however, I searched Amazon for baby strollers and pillows for nursing mothers, since a longtime friend of mine is expecting and I'd like to get her something major. I didn't search any other sites, and I haven't gone to any baby stores yet either.

Amazon was pretty fast and sneaky at selling this information. I guess a mailing list of new parents would be a valuable one, so they go the extra mile to get those addresses out to buyers of lists. Simply amazing, since I didn't even make a purchase, only put a few things in the cart then took them out.

I think I'm going to experiment with some other types of items, and see what happens.

Wow! My jaw dropped. It's one thing to have user-specific ads show up on the webpages we're looking at (based on our cookies), but that's a big leap to assume you're a prospective parent or grandparent and put something in the mail. Insurance sales must be a tough business, wonder what she had to pay for that mailing list.

I wonder too. Baby related sales are big, and I bet wedding stuff would be almost as lucrative.

EVERYTHING you do on the Internet--even posting a blog--is recorded for information.

When it's not something you are writing into a blog or forum, and is only search activity, it's scary to see the extent of how companies are recording that information about you.

Scary, eh? I'm so glad to be rid of unwanted "spams", once I changed my email address. How long will it last, I wonder?

My Yahoo accounts aren't too bad at all. They have a pretty good spam filter. Worse when the spam starts showing up in your actual house mail.

We're living in glass houses ... Let us know how you do with your "research".
