I made an almost five hour drive from Tampa to Jacksonville today. When you live in the suburbs it is easy to forget that most of Florida is citrus groves, cane fields, miles of farmland and even more miles of cattle ranches and horse farms. Florida has more horses than even Kentucky and is home to several herds(?) of the famous Lipizzan stallions.
Especially out in the rural areas there are many older houses and churches. The Florida 'cracker' influence is so distinct: sprawling porches, high ceilings and roof vents to allow the hot air inside to escape.
I am in Jacksonville for a USCGAUX District Convention. I am a district officer, so I kind of have to be here. I don't mind. Conventions can be fun. Ok, maybe I will do a first (for me): post a picture of myself in uniform.
I value my service to the USCG Auxiliary. We serve the Coast Guard and our country and are the only volunteer/ civilian members of the Department of Homeland Security. I know- some folks here (even some whom I like a lot) do not understand why I serve and have no appreciation for my commitment. That's okay too. The world would be a boring place if we all thought alike.
